Handi Cabin Fever

Snowed again last night and another arctic air mass is moving in. :(  I have been steadily working on my walnut thumbhole stock, getting ready to start the forearm. However, I have been reading alto of the posts recently and one stood out. Someone mentioned a 1 in 20 twist 44 mag. That would make an outstanding candidate for ream up to 445 SM. I know cause I got one already. The heavy bullets are superb in mine with the faster twist rate. Then I saw a 444 marlin barrel in the for sale section. Mmmmmkay, what if I bought that. Cut the barrel portion off. Use the approx. 18 inch barrel in 1 in 20 twist to build another Handi by using the cut barrel and stubbing back into the original stub, rechamber to 445SM or even stub into a Maurer barreled reciever or M95 Steyr, but this time leave the enbloc feed in place.
If I take the cut barrel and stub it into a mauser or M95 then I could  buy a 6.5x55 military barrel and stub it into the 444 marlin stub... of course I need another receiver, and I need to whip up another stock set or two... ???
See what I mean? These project ideas just spawn one after the other after the other.
Spring can't get here fast enough so I can get out and do some shooting.

FWIW, my 445SM Shikari (yes I did rechamber it and it is on the original frame and I am alive and well - I did my research on the rifle before the conversion ;)) will shot 1" 50 yard groups with the factory open iron sights.  The load is a 310g LWNGC over 23.5g H110, no chrony data.    I haven't shot 100 yard groups because I can't see well enough and I can't make myself D/T this gun for a scope rail.   Point is, the 1:38 twist will stabilize about as heavy a bullet as you can justify loading in a 445SM case.

But, but that shatters my whole concept of faster for heavier.
Now how am I supposed to justify going the very long way around to get my 6.5x55 handi and come up with a barrel blank for another 445 SM project? ;)

We are under 5 feet of snow and looking at three more months of it... so I know what you mean by "cabin fever..." This winter I have concentrated on Ruger M77 builds... but I am streamlining my Handi rifle arsenal at the moment... I have sold off a dozen over the last two months... but have six new projects on my work bench... the .338 Fed and 9.3X74R are pretty much complete, as are the hand carved BC Mannlicher walnut/rosewood .44 Mags... I have two more Mannlicher stock projects going... one a walnut/cocobolo and one a jacaranda laminate/cocobolo (which is a really nice combination, that I have on my .30/30 & 7.62X39 & .44 Mag set, pic below)... winter in Northern Ontario sucks...

That was my thinking also... the 9.3X74R lends itself perfectly to the Handi platform and it is a classy moose cartridge... I'm Fudding this gun with a nice walnut/rosewood full stock and some beefy irons... can you picture that cradled under my red wool jacketed arm on a frosty morning over looking a spruce ringed beaver slough??? One of these days, I'm going to be too old and achy to draw a bow, and then I'll pick up the 9.3X74R and take bullwinkle down...

That is some very nice work. I know what that takes too to get those custom stocks to look that good. Job well done.
I just need to stay focused on my projects I have going. Bring them to completion and then go back and use the posts as notes for reference to start my next wave.  :)
I know the fine folks further north have longer to go with the cold and snow. In 3 months time I hope to have my garden in and well on it's way, not shoveling more snow.

Great stuff Hoyt.  Let's be optimistic and hope winter will quit in the early part of April ::)   Yeah, I know, fat chance.  It seems the older I get, the less time I spend outdoors in the Winter and the more it drags.  This winter has been particularly bad.  I can put heat on in my reloading room in the barn, and it warms up in about an hour.....but all the tools are zero cold all day :'(

I had to run the air conditioner in my reloading room Sat. It was a bit too warm without it (80 degrees)Weeds are already starting to grow but we need rain really bad,Lakes around here are at all time lows and wells are drying up too. If this country was easy to live in it would be full of Yankees ,Thanks be it aint! :)

Well I had to cut another load of wood yesterday and hope it don't spoil..... and I need to think about getting my bedding plants started. Its hot , its cold, its hot, its cold, its ..... enough to make you schizophrenic....Damn yankees....... damn rednecks..... like I told the guy the other day- there was only 3 people I ever really liked but none of them are around here ??? and one of them died.

Now fellas, yanks and johnny rebs alike, I was born in Indiana, but grew up in the Central Texas Hill Country, went to High School in Georgetown, TX. My two youngest sons are Texans by birth. I have lived in both the north and south about equal parts of my life at this point. Love 'em both, but they do have their good sides and their bad. Fine people in both locations and some not so fine in both too.
So, I have prayed for cooler weather in a Texas summer that would seem to never end, and also prayed for warmer weather in Indiana when we get one of these never ending winters with thier parade of arctic gifts from our northern neighbors.
Both provide long periods of time the outdoors is less than desirable which gives rise to Cabin Fever regardless if it is induced by 110 in the shade or -15 w/40 mph winds making it feel like -45.
In fact I already have formed another project... A siamese mauser stubbed with a 16.5 inch 1 in 20 twist 444 marlin handi barrel and then chambered up to a 1.8 inch case length 303-44 or 7.62x54R-44 wildcat. Finish that out in a custom full length tiger maple stock trimmed in walnut or bloodwood accents... See there I go again... Now to give credit where credit is due, BB and Jedman has given some inspiration on this account so I can't claim all the credit for that one, but I think that will be doable platform that welds my 2 favorite rifle platforms together in a pruposeful harmony to provide and defend onself wether they be yank or reb.

as for the projects- Jeeezzus- are we getting complicated or what ? I was thinkin'... can I just rechamber a 444 to 45/70 and neck it into a 44/77 ??

Don't stop there, you were on a roll. 444 to 45/70 then 44/77... yes, yes... go on. ;)
