Good bullet for a 44 mag winchester ?
« on: February 24, 2014, 05:57:33 AM »
The gun is a mod. 1892 Winchester  new manf made in Japan . . It has a 20 inch barrel . Use is general pleasure shooting - paper targets , tin cans etc. It will also be used for critters - deer , fox or any legal game mostly for control so pelt damage is not a concern. I would like to find one bullet that will do for all the above mentioned shooting as I like to sight in and not switch around with regard to bullets. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Your two cents sounds like the best bang for the buck.   ;)
Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.

Because you are shooting a rifle,  and your priority is playing, I recommend a 280 gr LFN.  It can be shot at low velocities, and is a quick  varmint killer even with mild loads and feeds smooth as silk.  Best speed for playing, in my opinion is 1200 fps at the bottom, with 1400 fps making it a deadly thing with fairly flat trajectory.  If you like playing with a bit more snap, crank it up to 1600 or 1800, but you might get a bit too much kick out of shooting it at the upper velocities.  Top end velocity will be around 1900 fps. and recoil will have most shooters undevided attention.

For other readers who might be interested in the heaviest weight practical,, a 300 gr is max accurate weight, and top velocity a bit over 1800 fps and it needs to be moving at around that speed to stabilize at long range.  My testing being at 450 yards.
