mod 92 Winchester

 I have seen a few mod 92 Winchesters in gun shops here , new production . 45 Colt , 44 mag. and 357 mag. They run a tad over $1000.00 depending on the shop. I looked at a 45 Colt and it was a very nice gun. I like the look of the crescent butt plate but not sure how it would feel shooting a 44 mag. I also wonder if the 45 Colt loaded to Ruger/ TC spec would be safe in this 92 ?
 Anyone else tried one or looked one over ? Any  thoughts ?

My opinion is it's way overpriced.  The quality and workmanship is a whole lot better than Winchester was putting out before they closed the plant, but the tang safety and the price kills my interest in them.
 
I'm sure they're as strong (probably stronger) as any original '92 ever made.  According to Paco Kelly the model 92 is a stronger action than the model 94.

I agree, to much $$ and no worries on strength.

I love the 45 too, but question for you. Have you looked at Browning 92 clones?  I saw three last weekend in two different shops nice wood super nice quality and about 700$. But 44 mag.

I think I would like a 357 mag. maybe but so far none have been in the stores. so decisions decisions.  I thought that the price on the win. was high but then looking at other guns it is about right for what you get. Here now I see post 94's for over 700 dollars used. Just a year ago they were $400.00 or under.
 I see the Brownings here and they are nice guns . I would not rule them out yet.

They're made by Miroku so no question they are top quality.
 
I just can't bring myself to spend $1000 on a pistol caliber levergun, but that's just me!

I'm the same about spending the money but looking at what other guns and products cost now it seems they are inline.

Shootall:  hey, I have a Rossi M92 in 357 and it is a real sweetie.  Very easy to shoot, dang accurate with everything I put down the tube and it looks very good.  I do not think a Rossi would run anywhere near what a Winchester made M92 would cost.
 
I think the 357 is a good bet for a carbine.  Some of the heavy (bullet) loads I prefer for the 357 mag revolver, the 200 gn swc loads I like, are very accurate in my Rossi. 
 
I realize it is not a Winchester M92 but the Rossi looks very nice.  I had one problem with it when it was new, don't recall exactly what it was but sent it abck and got it back within 1 week, fixed.  That's pretty good service I think.  And then too, if it were to need some real custom work or action job or something like that, Paco Kelly makes these thiings tick like clockwork.   Good luck.

I haven't seen the Rossi or Puma in shops here lately may be some will show up. I want a shooter / truck/4 wheeler / what ever gun so a shooter that cost less would be fine.

Ok I found a used Win. 92 in 44 mag. for about 300 less than new . It is in great shape. Half octagonal half round barrel.

Shootall: if you get that 44 magnum M92, get onover to Veral Smith's website and read his recent posts or rsponses to AtLaws questions regarding what slugs to use in the 357 he has. 


In my post to you I mentioned I prefer the 200 gn slug.  In running this issue past Veral Smith, Veral told AtLaw that his preference for the 357 was a 180 gn slug of his LBT design and that the 200 gn slug was too heavy for the bore.  When I found favor with the 200 gn slugs it was during the metallic silhouette days with pistols and revolers shooting to 200 yds and unless you cast and loaded Elmer Keiths 173 gn swc, there was nothing between the 158 gn cast and the 200 except his 168-173 gn cast swc. 


Now, with geniuses like Veral Smith, LBT slugs like his 180 gn fn are the real performers in the 357 mag, more so than the 200 gn slugs and based on Veral's response to AtLaw I think I'm going shopping for some of Verals 180 gn fn slugs. 


With that in mind, knowing that you are seriously looking at that 44 magnum M92, I would heartily suggest you contact Veral for his recommendation as to which of his bullets would best serve you from that carbine.  Who knows, it may not be a 240-250, or even a 300 gn, it might be something in the 270-280 gn range.  I would run it past Veral for his input, and I hope this helps.

Thanks good idea to ask Mr. Smith. I have had a Marlin and 94 in 44 mag. along with a 77-44. To be honest I always used jacketed bullets . In revolvers I have used an assortment of lead bullets and seem to like some I found on line, Lead heads and one other. But and you must be reading my mind , not long ago at a gun show I picked up a lube/seizer and have also acquired a mold ( may be useful maybe not) . But it would be nice to use lead in this little carbine if I get it. Its over 100 miles to the store and it is on assignment so I will check next time I'm there.

I have a Rossi 45 with the cresent butt and a 20" octagon barrel.
I load 250gr. jhp over 22gr. of 2400 powder and the recoil is easyon the shoulder even with the dished butt plate.
I also have a Rossi in 44mag with the carbine stock and 20' round barrel.
It is an extremely light little gun.
Great for just stumbling through the woods with.
Even being light it does not have much recoil with full house magnum loads.
both guns can group under 3" at 100 yards WITH ME DOING THE SHOOTING!
I  did put a peep on the 45.
