24v savage trigger trouble
« on: February 03, 2014, 04:24:01 PM »
Hammer won't cock on this gun.  I try to cock it and the hammer doesn't catch. Any help will be much appreciated.

I think the trigger just engages a notch in the bottom of the hammer. If you pull the stock off you should be able to see the connection. Take the butt plate off and there will be a deep large hole in the stock. Reach in there with a large straight blade screwdriver and unscrew that bolt. An old fashioned L shaped auto lug wrench with a screwdriver shaped tip works good. Then you should be able to pull the stock off the action and see what the problem might be.

I took the stock off and remove the spring that gives tension to the hammer. There is a notch on the hammer, the trigger has a set screw I think catches the notch but I'm not sure how it works. I've played with the screw and the hammer but the trigger won't hold the hammer with just the tension I put on it with my hand no matter how I adjust it.

Did you but the gun used??? I'm not real clear about what you are describing but it sounds to me like someone added a setscrew to make the trigger adjustable. If that is what it is try just removing the screw.

I bought it used 27 years ago. I took the trigger off it and it looks like somebody modified the trigger.

Yup that's what happened. So if you have the screw out put er back together and she should work. Cross your fingers, if it still won't work, probably the best thing is a trip to a good old fashoned gunsmith. The good news is, if you have to take it to a gunsmith is the fix isn't real expensive, just a little work with a stone.

Surprises me somebody made the effort to make an adjustable trigger on a 24V. They aren't known to be target rifles. What caliber is the top barrel?? Does it shoot good??

The top barrel is 222. It shoots pretty good, not as good as my 840 springfield 222, but decent enough.

Doesn't Numrich have any parts?

I didn't find the trigger for a 24v series d on their list. I'm still checking the internet for the trigger

I am aware of the A,B,C & D guns, but what the changes to the trigger itself? Im asking if a different series trigger might be the same.

I know stock, mono block and ejector differences between these models but maybe the triggers are same?  I do not know, just putting it out there...

Probably the same parts as any later guns. The V model had centerfires on the top. I've had several and I think the frame is about the same. But, do you need a trigger or a hammer?? Could be the hammer is the problem. Then maybe a hammer from a rimfire wouldn't work for a centerfire.

I took an old Marlin that wouldn't stay cocked all the time to a smith. He stoned the hammer and now it works fine. If I remember the bill was $27

I was talking a "V" models. Yes they surely are different as the CF barrels necessitate a taller receiver to accommodate.

I surely am NO authority. I like the 24's and only reviently have I really been reading up on them. I know some basic differences. Like bottom release, side release, tang release, rf/shotgun and CF/shotgun as well as the 242 that's a 410/410. Now I just learned of the of the VS!!

I'll bet a number of hammers or triggers from 'b' or 'c' guns might work. It's Just not publicized.

As near as I can tell the hammer notch is ok. Who ever did the trigger job butchered the notch that catches and holds the hammer. I looked again on Numrich at the 24v series c and the picture of the trigger for that is pictured below, along with the trigger from my gun. I'm not sure if the one I found on Numrich will fit.

If the trigger interface with the hammer goes to the end someone added a new sear surface. Perhaps just replace and stone to shape.

I was searching eBay yesterday and noticed MANY triggers and hammers listed... The triggers are CHEAP about 4-7$ but hammers about 50$.

Do you think the series c trigger could be made to work? As near as I can tell the hammer is ok.
