Marlin 795 & 70PSS

Morning everyone!

I placed a order of one of each a couple weeks back. We are still looking for the Papoose, but the 795 should be here next Monday. Actually it was in-stock when we ordered it two weeks back, but apparently did not get pulled so didn't arrive with last weeks order.

I just wanted a plinker, that's what the 795 is for and the Papoose is the packer to replace the aging Charter arms AR7 I sold. I know Marlin has been running down hill,  but I looked a number of 795s and altho cheap, they look OK so at 150$ I am taking the plunge. I'll tear it down 100% and smooth things out likely before I even shoot it! Not so much cause I NEED to, I like to tinker... 

The Papoose is one I have shot before and altho liked the idea never bought. I got a AR7 some years back in a ''deal''... It functioned well but was not accurate. I also like the TD 10/22 and almost grabbed one last night but held off because my dealer had 6 of them and doesn't anticipate selling out in the next couple weeks. SO If our inquiry's about the 70PSS don't pan out. I will grab the Ruger.

The Ruger is heavier and I don't have any 10-22 mags. But I have a couple doz mags for the Marlins.

Any one have any of these rifles? Please tell me how you like or don't like them!! I would really love to hear your stories.

The Papoose model that I've had/have since about 1987 is the 70P with the wood stock.  "Wouldn't Leave Home Without It".  Been used for years on family camping trips.  Backpacking in the woods/ National Forests.  As a backdoor "critter getter".  I like its light weight, compactness, accuracy and reliability.  It can be carried/packed places where handguns are not legal or frowned upon.  Never had any problems with the barrel coming loose. On long shooting sessions just check it once in a while.  Same with a scope, keeps it's zero even after gun has been taken down.  I have a second complete stock shortened to minimum legal length for lightness and compactness when backpacking.  Great little rifle and really useful unlike some other "compact" rifles.  You'll like it.

WOW Small world!!  GLAD you like it!!  I sold off a few to fund a couple others! I don't think I did anything with it accept true and sharpen edge.  Hope you enjoy it!!

I was amazed at the 3.5# advertised weight!!  I SURE hope we can find one for me to buy!!

I have one of the 70P rifle (ducks unlimited) and I must say that it is surprisingly accurate. seems I cant miss with it. Light weight fits well in the pack and goes togtether nice and quick.  cant really say any thing neg. except that the lack of sling privisions is the only down side to them other than finding mags to have on hand, just not something you see all the time and somewhat spendy... I had one accident with mine in which the mag was "lost" while going through brush, kind of flustating when your semi auto becomes a single shot, so keep extra mags on hand....

The newer 70PSS might really weigh 3.5 lbs with their plastic hollow stocks.  My original 70P with wood stock actually weighs in at 4 lb. even w/ magazine.  That's why I have a "lightened" second stock for backpacking.

That's one reason I WANT the papoose! I have about a dozen mags already as I have a couple Marlins that use them. I picked up a couple 10 rounders last night 14$ ea. Not a fan of the shiny nickel but they should work.

As for the sling, I think it has studs, but if not I'll add some.

when i was looking for spare magazines,
i wasn't having much luck. for what ever
reason at the time nobody had any. the
10 rounder that came with it was fine, but
i wanted some extras. i'd stopped at a small
shop and asked and the guy came out with
a "junkbox" full of stuff.(goody box to me)
he had 2 blue magazines that looked right.
i think i paid 5 or 7 dollars for both. when i
got em home, they wouldn't fit. there is a
small tit inside the magazine well on the
rifle that fits a groove in the mag. i made
me some proper grooves in the blue mags
with a dremel and a burr. so, if you find the
older mags without the grooves, groove 'em
and enjoy.

Yes, IIRC Marlin had two different LR/RF mags thru the years. Its been some time since I had them side by side.

it's really simple to do. i took out
the followers and springs and eyeballed
a slot with the factory mag in my lap
as a guide. it really took longer than
it should have cuz i wanted it to look
"factory"    a little cold blue after to
make it "just right"

My papoose has seen a few miles, or maybe a few thousand miles.    It was my first firearm purchase back in 1986.  The mag lips are so thin from feeding ammo that it barely holds them.  i've been looking for blued ones for a long time.  hehe  I mostly shoot my model 60 for squirrel and don't pack as much, or it'd get used more.  I also converted mine to use a 1/4-32 nipple and can load it as a 22 Muzzle loader.  I use .22 air gun balls with thermal receipt paper for patches.  Kind of fun. 


I did the tape camo job the year after I bought it.  Cannot believe it's still holding on.    I sewed some camo material on the case to cover the red too.

 My dealer has a bunch on the wall. I picked up two 10 rnd mags 16$ ea and I think the 7 rnds are 15$ ea.

I bought  a 795 not long ago and was surprised by how accurate it is. I put a red / green dot sight and a Boyds pepper laminate stock on it. Really made a different looking rifle out of it. I found extra 10 round magazines at Midway. I had a 10/22 several years ago and I think I'm going to like this rifle better.

Well I picked up my 795 yesterday!

Looks pretty good, AWEFUL trigger...good think I can fix it.




Next week I should get to shoot it. I mounted a 4X32AO UTG mildot scope in Burris lo rings. Perfect fit!
