What would you recommend
« on: February 07, 2014, 04:50:21 PM »
Hi,
Please help me out with your recommendation.

The user is experienced and licensed for cc.
Use is mostly home defense but also protection from predators when they're out working young dogs. (No injuries yet but they've had a couple scares with coyotes.)
Open to any action da/sa, dao, da revolver, anything.
They want light, easy to carry, top quality and serviceability, and they don't like all the 'levers and buttons' of decockers and safeties.
Budget around $400, and used, as they want quality and it will get beat up anyway.

What model and caliber do you recommend?

Thanks!

Lots of choices out there.  If they are experienced, they should have some thoughts on what they want.  Personally, for what you are describing, I think a Glock 19 in 9mm would be a good choice in an auto.  9mm is plenty with modern HP bullets, handles well, holds 15 rounds, light, reliable, and relatively easy to carry, good trigger pull, and no safeties to worry about.

Same as Bigeasy suggested, just the 40 cal version of it in the 23 model. 2 less rounds and a split between 9mm and 45 cap power. LEO trade ins go for $320 here.

A Glock 17 or 19 police trade-in fits those requirements perfectly.

I would suggest a Sig 239 in 357 sig which will give the added range for the coyotes. A .40 cal barrel can easy be added if needed.

If one safety lever is too much for the user, get a revolver - 357 in 4" should do better than a snubbie.

If one safety lever is not too much, get a Zastava made M57 Tokarev variant:  inexpensive, extremely powerful, mil-spec reliability, easily serviceable when and if need be, flat and easy to carry, and with good ammo and/or reloads the caliber is absolutely deadly for personal defense.  Please note that the cailber is extremely powerful in the fmj but when reloaded with a soft nose or flat nose slug it seems dang near explosive.  Good luck.

II Second the revolver: If they are experienced, don't like levers and push buttons????? Get a Glock 9mm or .40. Or get a 4 or 2in revolver. You can practice with .38 spl ammo, load with .357 when and if they can handle the power and move up. Taurus makes some nice  357 mags in that price range. And don't discount a good used handgun. A Ruger GP100 could come close to that price, maybe a few bucks more. Charter Arms Bulldog revolver in straight .38 or .357 will also do the trick.

The Glock 23 is one of the best ratio of weight to power to capacity out there they are going to get. No safety levers to mess with and one button to push for mag release. If they cant deal with that maybe a pointy stick  ;D
