just shot my 454 today and there seems to be a lot of gas escaping around the cartridge case. it also put a couple of little pits on the face of the frame around the firing pin hole. no signs of excessive pressure on cartridge but a lot of powder residue on the face and the rear of the barrel. the chamber may be oversized and i only shot ten rounds. any input would be appreciated.

specs 12 inch ss bbl open sighted factory
250 gr xtp loaded in hornady brass and 296 powder

additional info: found two spent primers had a pin hole split on the edge possible gas leak point. not flattened just a defective primer i guess.

What primers are you using? Small Rifle or pistol? Should be small rifle to handle the pressures of the cartrige. If the chamber is oversized the cases will be bulged excessively. If the firing pin is deformed it could puncture the primer also. It should have a nice smooth round tip.

small rifle remington brand primers were used and the leak was a veerrryy small crack on the edge of the primer no where near the firing pin. found same cracks on two of the fifty my buddy shot out of his redhawk. just a bad batch i guess. grouping was decent not as good as my .308 or 22-250 but decent for open sights. about two inches at fifty off a rest; not what i am used to in all my other weapons. i demand no more than 1 moa at 1oo

All you had to say was Remington! I've had no luck with them at all. Misfires galore but when they did go the vel and es was good. Just don't like the suprizes with a 454. Try Fed Gold metal match or Win.

I've been shooting my .454 barrel a lot over the past year with several different powders and lots of different bullet weights and never had a problem like this, but I'm also using CCI BR-4 primers. 2" at 50 yds. with open sights is pretty darn good, don't kid yourself!

i'm just used to moa or better out of all my weapons. i've been loading for over 15 years and have never had this problem. i load for several people through my folks gun shop and the all demand the perfection that they know that i demand of myself. i shoot sil. comp for about 10 years and i am just a perfectionist. i load all my ammo as if it may have to defend mine or someone's life. thanx guys for all the imput just needed a second opinion. you think i'm picky in my guns you ought to see me work on bows.

Two factors: weak primer cup (be sure they are 7 1/2's not 6 1/2's) and a load that could well be overpressure (for this chamber). I'd recheck primers AND back down the charge. Those little pits on the recoil shield are from the gas escaping from the primer cup. NOT GOOD. I would have the frame checked by someone knowledgeable in Contenders. May have to replace firing pin bushing and possibly reface inner frame. Can't tell without seeing. Remember what may be safe in one (SRH) may be too much in another (your barrel).

yes they are 7 1/2 and they are not max loads. i have been loading for 18 years and have never had any problems with any other primers except rem. the primer was not flat just shoddy manufactured. two cases that were fired from the srh had the same problem. there were only four out of the one hundred that were bad. just a rarity. talked to ed employee at gun show and he stated that rem is crap and he does not use them either. from now on i will never stray from win. again.
