.308 Encore patterns not groups
« on: February 23, 2004, 02:05:18 PM »
My new encore in 308 is giving me fits. I'm not getting anything close to a group. tried Win. silvertips, Rem. ballistic tips, Hornady A-MAX, soft point, and moly-coats.
Checked mounts, scope, rings, no problems. It does show a bit of a preference for Hornady, but it is still iffy. All bullet weights have been in the 165-180 class. Any suggestions?

165 Sierra or 168 Sierra match BT over 42-43 gr IMR 4064. If that don't group at or inside of 1", eat the barrel.   Even Factory 180 Remingtons group inside of 1 1/2" from my 15" Encore and 4x Leupold.  All of my .308's, long and short, love this load. Good luck. I love my .308!! 8)

Please define size of patterns?  Since you have already checked your mounts, you could try another scope to isolate that variable.  I would also check the crown of our muzzle and see if it is damaged or nicked.  Most of them shoot real good!!

My 7-08 had the same problem until I changed to a T/C duo mount.
When I took the Weaver base off the barrel I noticed two small marks
where the front part that hangs out unsupported had been making contact.
New mount and my pattern turned into a 3/4 inch group.

Mine shoots 1/2" groups on a good day using Sierra 150 or 168gr BT match bullets over W-748. Also using a weaver mount. I agree with Graycg, Check the crown.   KN

02/24/04 A couple of months ago, there was a discussion on this forum about the fore end stock causing inaccuracy 'cause it touched the barrel and it should be free-floated.  I didn't buy into that story then.

However, 2 weeks ago, my buddy showed up with his new Bullberry 7-30 Waters Improved and couldn't hit a pickup truck at 300 meters.  While I was shooting and reloading, I noticed that the heavy custom Bullberry fore end was loose.  He found that the Bullberry hanger bar was loose.

Once tightened, it shot like laser guided missles.

Fore end has not been mentioned yet.  One way to check if the fore end is causing a problem is remove it and shoot the TC without it.

My 15" 308 easily shoots 1.5" groups with factory 150 gr Remingtons.  I have a 24" 308 barrel that is another story all together.  It shot patterns instead of groups like you mention.  It now shoots pretty good, but took a lot of effort to get it there.

My HEAVY barrel .308 15" shoots like groups soooooooooooo good. My 24" .308 rifle barrell groups like a shotgun. I believe barrell heat is the problem here. Wayathink? :?  :?

Factory bbl? Did you clean it before you shot it? Is the chamber square with the bore?(bored off center) Have you cleaned it up REALLY GOOD now that you have shot it and tried again? If it favors hornadys you may have to seat the other bullets a bit farther off the lands. Don't be afraid to try .030-.040 off, as it gets smoothed up it'll get better.

Jakester, what type of forearm rest are you using?Soft is bad-sandbags are very good. Also JD says to rest your pistol close to the triggerguard, not out on the forearm(don't know about that one as I've always rested close in).  Pat
