Funny how these threads come back to life as people actually take delivery.   I am very interested in the chronograph data.  How does the 240 Wby mag compare to the 6 MM Remington?  I know its faster, but how much faster.

where did you get the rifle?

Well I got one of the new S2 Vanguards in 240 Weatherby and shot it yesterday. I put a 12x Redfield on it and shot it off my back porch at a measured 100 yards. The first group measured 7/16" and the second group was 3/4". I went down and changed the targets and shot a third group and it opened up to 1" and until I got up and went  down to get the target I realized it was misting rain. I was shooting an 85 grain HPBT Sierra bullet with 48.4 grains of 4350 as listed as the accurate load in my reloading book. I have not chronographed it yet because of the weather but will do that later. It is a very accurate rifle and the recoil pad is strange, Soft and almost no noticeable recoil.

I agree on the 6mm Remington. I had a 788 Remington 6MM and sold it. Foe once, I found one in a pawn shot, shoots 1/2" groups with ease..you can bet I won't sell it. Have a Weatherby 257, would like a 240 too!!

     I have one of the original Wheaterby MK 5s in 240 Wheaterby mags with a leapold vari X 3 6.5 to I think 18 on it and have only used it for paper punching at 100 yds. it doesnt do any better at 100 than a good 243, I got it for coyotes but havent used it yet as I have been busy the last 3 yrs, I believe it would be a excellent Antolope rifle but I cant speak from experience I load the 105 gr bullets and at present dont have the charge or powder at hand, ammo is high$$  brass is High$$ so if you get one plan on reloading if alot of shooting is expected.  Jim

i'd just build a 6mm Remington...  BUT, if i knew in the 70's what i know today, i would have had a 25/06 instead of a .240 Wby...  IMO it's a thousand percent better as it will have similar recoil with light weight bullet, and be much seperior with heavier bullets...

I agree on the 25-06. It offers great versatility in terms of brass and bullets. I see the .240 Weatherby as mostly nostalgic or overly specialized. Plus, barrel life is probably short.

yup but i have a 6mm i have a couple 25-06s and i have a 257wby. What i dont have is a 240!

well since the original post ive acquired a mark v standard in 240. Its a 24 inch pencil weight matte blued barrel and a plain (nicely figured) walnut stock with no spacers and standard checkering vs skip line. Its become my favorite crop damage deer shooting rilfe. I don't know how many deer its killed but its somewhere between 50 and a 100. Gun shoots 3/4 moa with a 100 sierra or bt. Ive shot deer out to 400 yards with it (although I like to limit that gun to 300) It just plain kills. Only rifle I have that gets near as much use is my 2506 and there about identical twins ballistically. I LOVE MY 240. I really like my 257 and 300 wbys too the day they plant me that 240 will still be in the safe.

  I still have my 240 also, for a couple of seasons, I was having shoulder problems, so I used my 240 for it's "less" recoil after I shot a buck, and was shooting does for the freezer, like this one,



  Anyway, I've shot several deer with mine since my last post, but now my shoulder is much better, I went back to my "go to gun" for deer, my 8x57jrs.

  "IF" I could do it all over, knowing what I know now, I would I would skip the 240 and get a 25-06!

what kind of 240 is that. I don't recall ever seeing a left handed one?

  Remington 700 BDL...

  Good shooter, just not worth what it cost to shoot, when the 25-06 is available!

  BTW, Mark V's were available in LH, chambered in 240...

  I had built a friendship with Parker Ackley, he made the bbl., and chambered it for me.
