Range time today with youngest grandson
« on: August 02, 2020, 05:00:02 PM »
My youngest grandson, Wyatt, (Matt's youngest boy) and me had some shooting time on my range today.

He had come down last night and told me he wanted to shoot this morning. I told him he best get down before it got too hot for me to go out. Not a surprise he wasn't here early, he's generally not much on early rising.

So a bit before 8:00 knowing it was getting kinda late for me to be able to do what was needed I got all the gear ready. I had changed scopes and mounts on his S&W M&P 15-22 so needed to sight it in. I also took my Remington R15 .223 out as I had also changed scopes on it since it had last been shot.

I had Wyatt's rifle but no magazines so I started with the R15. I don't think I had more than a half dozen rounds fired if that before he was down at the shooting bench with me.

I had him get a magazine and we sat aside the R15 to work on his AR. The scope was way off and it took a bit to get it dialed in but I did dial it in and had it hitting the smallest of my metal swinger targets at 25 yards each time. So I turned it over to him and he finished off the box of ammo.

I then got back to sighting in the R15 and that also took quite a bit of effort. It was hitting so high I wasn't catching the bullets on the backer I had the target on. Once I figured out where the bullets were going I dialed it down until I had it zeroed and then turned it over to Wyatt. I had the same issue with his AR, it was so high I wasn't seeing where the bullets were going. I had to move that target into about 12 yards to catch them and once I knew where it was sight in went smoothly.

Wyatt then shot 4 or 5 20 round mags of my reloads thru the R15 before we called it a morning.

I had to make several trips up to the 100 yard line on my range dialing the R15 in. Man was it a muddy mess up there. I've done a lot of work on it last year and this year taking dirt off to put it in places I wanted to fill in. My range angles upward from the flat at the 25 yard line to shooting bench. I've taken several feet of dirt out of that angle and flattened it considerably. That also makes the dirt backstop taller. I guess at the 100 yard line I've removed close to 6' of dirt. That all makes for a muddy mess until I get it grassed again.

We rode up in my John Deere Gator each time and both did those tires pick up a load of much. In fact when I set the target out the first time I think I gained about 2" of height due to the mud on the bottom of my boots.

All it all we had a fun time at the range in spite of all the mud.

Tomorrow Wyatt will be 13 years old. He has been shooting with me since he was about 4 years old I guess and owns several guns of his own.
