coyote hunting..
« on: August 13, 2020, 03:26:55 AM »
I plan on trying coyote hunting when the season arrives.  I have rifles in 22 mag, 17HMR, 44mag and 450 bushmaster..nothing between those.
So, I am wondering if coyote hides are worth much in NY.   In effect, should I use the 22 mag, the .17 HMR..or just go ahead with the bushmaster, ignoring hide damage?

I've never been a trapper or otherwise a seller of animal hides. I know last I heard fur prices were down pretty badly. I used to watch the trapping forum at GBO to see what they were saying about hide prices but it has been a long time since that forum had any activity to speak of.

I'd go with whatever I wanted to use and not worry about the hides.

As to your options, I personally consider the .22 magnum to be really marginal especially if you expect the coyote to fall within sight of where you shot it. I personally consider the .17 HMR to be even less adequate. Head shots are all I will take with either.

So for me that really leaves the .44 magnum and .450 Bushmaster. I personally would chose the .44 magnum and if hides isn't an issue go with lighter 180 or 200 grain JHPs for instant rat there dead results.
