I guess I see things slightly different. God is a God of love, however, he is also a God of justice.
"3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. (1 Sam 15:3) (1 Sam 15:3)
Saul lost his kingdom and life, because he refused God's order to kill ALL the Amalekites, including their animals and their king. Remember when God said to Saul.."what is that bleating of sheep I hear?"
...And it appears God will act independently, as he did with the case of Uzza.
Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzza, and He struck him because he put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God. (1Chron 13:10)
..And how about Lot's wife?
Yes we see in the NT, a seemingly more loving God, but we should realize that inthe OT, he was instructing his people in the law. Now the law explained, he is utilizing His mercy side, but still His justice prevails... there is no heaven for those who reject him !
