Oscar De La Hoya has revealed that the idea of facing old foe Floyd Mayweather in a 'revenge fight' is very intriguing to him as plots a return to the ring 12 years after retiring.

The 47-year-old has been retired since 2008 but announced earlier this year he is planning to make a comeback, with Gennady Golovkin mooted as a potential opponent.

In a recent interview, De La Hoya expressed he would consider fighting the current middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, just weeks after the Mexican left his Golden Boy Promotions.

However, De La Hoya insists he's much more interested in a rematch with Mayweather.

'I've always prided myself in fighting the very best, and why go after the second-best?' De La Hoya said on Fight Hub TV.

'Why not go after the guy that beat [Canelo]? Why not go after [Floyd] Mayweather, for instance, in a revenge fight? That's something that's very intriguing. We'll see how I feel, and then we'll take it from there.'

De La Hoya, known as Golden Boy during his fighting days, hasn't fought since his wipeout loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2008, while he admits his defeat by Mayweather a year earlier continues to be a thorn in his side.

'I would definitely think about [fighting Canelo],' he added. 'But my eye is on a bigger prize. For any fight that you might have lost or that was close or whatever, it's always gonna be a thorn.

'I strongly feel that with the way I'm feeling and the way I've been training and the way things are unfolding, it could be very interesting.'

De La Hoya, who turns 48 in February, went 36-9 during his 45-fight career before remaining in the boxing scene by starting up Golden Boy Promotions.

His fight with Mayweather in Las Vegas went the distance, before a split decision went against him in the MGM Grand.

The former champion admits he hasn't even begun sparring yet and is ready to take that next step on the road to a comeback.

'(Sparring is) the next phase of training,' he said. 'I want to make my decision very carefully and think about it after I spar. It's gonna happen very soon.'

Meanwhile, Mayweather is returning to the ring once again for an exhibition-style fight against YouTuber Logan Paul.

Mayweather - who has a 50-0 undefeated record from his sensational boxing career - will take on the 25-year-old social media star in February 2021.

Despite being the overwhelming favourite to win, the veteran boxer, 43, is said to be training 'extensively' as the fight's promoter claims knockouts will be allowed.
