Major winter storm to drop up to 2 feet of snow across Northeast, forecasters say
Nor'easter to impact travel through Tuesday
Greg NormanBy Greg Norman | Fox News

National Forecast, Feb. 1
A major winter storm slamming the Northeast on Monday morning is forecast to drop up to two feet of snow across an area stretching from Pennsylvania to New England, impacting cities such as Philadelphia, New York City and Boston.

Officials along the heavily populated I-95 corridor are warning residents to stay off the roads as snowfall rates may reach 2 inches an hour in some parts, while dozens of winter weather warnings and advisories are in effect. Nearly all flights heading in and out of New York City-area airports also already have been canceled, statistics show.

"On Monday evening, the snow will expand into Northern New England and continue over parts of the Northeast into Wednesday," the National Weather Service says, adding that rain and freezing rain is possible today from Washington, D.C. to Philadelphia.

WINTER STORM BRINGING HEAVY SNOW, STRONG WINDS TO THE NORTHEAST

The NWS is forecasting that northeast Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey and southern New York will see the heaviest snowfall, with New York City expected to get as much as 20 inches.

In the Big Apple, Mayor Bill de Blasio has restricted nonessential travel this morning, warning locals of "blizzard-like conditions" and wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour.

"Travel will be very difficult to impossible," the NWS adds. "The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches."

Elsewhere, Philadelphia is expected to get 5 inches of snow through Tuesday night, while Boston is forecast to receive 11 inches over the same period. Much of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine will get at least 6 inches of snow. Isolated parts of Pennsylvania and New York, however, could get more than 2 feet.

Winds are also forecast to cause coastal flooding from the Mid-Atlantic to New England into Tuesday.

The storm made its way across the Midwest over the weekend before turning up along the Mid-Atlantic towards New England, bringing over a foot of snow in some parts of the country.

Lara Pagano, a meteorologist with the NWS, told the Associated Press that the nor’easter overall will be a "pretty slow mover".

As of Monday morning, some areas had already gotten 3 inches to 5 inches of snow, with 6 inches in parts of Pennsylvania, she said. In parts of New Jersey, 7 inches already was reported as of Monday morning.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Sunday declared a state of emergency in order to deploy resources. He also closed all state government offices for nonessential personnel and the state’s six mega sites that distribute COVID-19 vaccines.

In New York, many vaccination appointments for Monday needed to be canceled as well.

I'm looking forward to it. Seat time on the tractor and time on the snowshoes too.

We only got about an inch. Lou said they ave totaled about 6 in this year, that's more than we have had. I can't hardly walk anymore and I miss walking back to the woods, kicking a hole in the snow and building a fire. I put a bucket back there to sit on as I feed the fire and enjoy te reanquility of watchin and hearing it, so peaceful. One of the boys asked, why do you do that Dad?? I said, because I ca, can you build a fire in the snow?? He said no. I told him he should have paid attention when I was trying to teach him. I put upsome dry wood in a small cave about 5 min from the house. It was snowing pretty heavy, lot of wind and 20 deg one day. I decided to go build me a fire in the cave. By the time I got there my fingers didn't work so good. Thankfully my wood and tinder was still there and I got a small fire going. I sat there warming myself, listening to the wind as the snow was blowing sideways and thoroughly enjoyed myself. CHARLIE.  :o :o

2 feet?? A weekly occurrence here. Except for this weird winter. About all we have on the flat is 2 feet right now. Usually by now its up to the living room window. I chuckle when they talk about declaring a state of emergency for some snow flurrys ;)

We may have gotten near that, even though that last storm didn't hit our area.  However, we usually take a couple feet in stride.
Big cities get hit hard, because they have very few places to plow snow to.  Around here, they can wing back snowbanks another 20 feet if needed..but there is not that kind of room in the cities.
