Welcome Spies,

I wish you the best of luck with your GPR.  After putting together a few kits, I believe that they are sound, dependable, and accurate rifles.  There are a few discussions out there now that will assist you with lubes, patches and ball size.  Do not count on the ramrod that came with the kit for cleaning and loading and general duties.  It is for hunting and emergencies.  Get yourself a "rangerod"  (I like metal with a brass bore protector) that is stronger and a bit stiffer than wood.  Before you shoot, be sure to clean the barrel with very hot soapy water with a very hot rinse.  Now I never put oil in my barrel, instead using some of the more natural lubes, but each person has his own thoughts on the subject and you will have to make up your own mind about patch lubes and preservatives.  I wish you the very best with your new rifle.  Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the group!  My first ML was also a kit.  Back in those days, the kits were not all that great and I really had my work cut out for me.  Todays kits are very high quality and you should have a great time with it.

Good luck!
Thanks!
Bob

This guy goes through the whole process in great detail.  Lots of pictures.  If you're on dial-up, it takes forever to download, but it's probably worth it just to see all the details.

Thanks for the welcome.  Sent the rifle to Lyman.  I pre-assembled it and they inletted it too much.  I would rather it were the other way around.  Is this normal?

Spies,

Welcome to the forum - and to muzzle loading.

As for Lyman GPR fit - I dunno.  You'll generally see better fit on Thompson Centers.  I don't know how picky you are and how bad the gun was.

I would give 'em a second try and if that doesn't meet your standards look into T/C.

However, if you can satisfy yourself with the GPRs fit - you should be happy with the performance.
