Shot the new S&W Model 14 Today WOW!!!!
« on: March 08, 2021, 11:43:51 AM »
OK guys I finally got out on the range with the new to me old S&W Model 14 with 8-3/8" barrel. All I can say is WOW, well OK I can say more and will.

Ya might recall the SA trigger pull is 1.75 pounds and DA pull is only 7 pounds. I was a little concerned due to the light pulls it might not fire 100% of the time. I no longer have that concern. It fired every time I pulled the trigger on a live round.

My first 5 shots were fired at 12 yards on paper just to be sure it was hitting close enough to back up further. It was. Group was 1.5" and about as dead center as you can get. Hopefully the first target photo I add will be this group.

I was using a load with the 140 Hornady Cowboy swaged lead bullet. I'm not sure the load at the moment, will add that later. It's just a mild middle of road .38 special load.

So I moved it out to 25 yards and shot another five shot group. This one was 2.75" and believe me I don't shoot that well these days. I used to but don't these days. Four of those five were in a 1,25" group, thus my comment, I don't shoot that well these days. Dunno which shot the flyer was. This group should be the second target I post, hopefully.

I'll also post a photo, OK a poor photo, of the revolver also.

I also fired some other loads to include a +P level load with 125 JHP over a healthy dose of Bullseye. Group at 12 yards was pretty much same as with the Hornady bullet but at 25 yards group opened widely and I only shot 3 of those on paper and then went to metal.

I shot 3 different loads on my metal targets at 25 yards, mostly with the Hornady lead bullet but also with the 125 JHP load and another with a 160 RNFP bullet I bought from someone thru the classifies years ago.

On steel all did well. I had no misses on my 12" gong or on the 8" falling plates. All are close enough to POA and accurate enough for the plates. So I tried a much smaller swinger target, about 4" in diameter I think, and using the Hornady bullet was able to hit 5 of 5. The other two loads just weren't up to it on that smaller target tho are fine on the 8" and 12" targets.

More shooting and more groups to see how accurate they are and where they are hitting is needed. I went thru prolly 50 rounds or so today.

This gun is just as amazing as I had hoped. Best trigger on any revolver I've ever owned, 100% reliability and way more accurate than I am.

Now I'll see if I can add photos of the two groups mentioned above. I'll have to make another post for the revolver and hope it doesn't flip it to some odd angle.

OK that worked well enough other than the 25 yard image posting first but both are labeled so you can tell which is which.

I see it has the Pachmayr Presentation grips. My favorite grips.   It looks like the blueing is pretty dark on the gun. Or is it the lighting that makes it look dark?   Nice Smith!

Photo is horrible, blue is dark and even. Just a tiny little place near end of barrel I assume from holster wear. There is a ring on cylinder.

I think this gun has been shot a fair bit but is tight and well maintained. It's a real winner for sure. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it in the gun case at the gun shop. Asking price was $800, I got it for $800 out the door.

Now I just need to find its .22LR twin a Model 17 with 8-3/8" barrel. I've owned multiple versions of both and like a fool let them go. This one will be with me until I die.

It's great to hear that you're out
and about doing what you truly
enjoy. I was thinking you've posted
in the past about being unable to
shoot because of physical ailments.
Good to hear that's rectified. Hopefully
there'll be many more powder burning
expeditions and holely targets

Doggone it, I'd be lucky to hit a man size target at 25 yards.

Good shootin Bill.   It seems you found a jewel.

I still have all the ailments and can't stand long enough for a round of skeet.

But this is my home range and from my back door to the shooting bench is perhaps 15 yards if that. I didn't even walk that. I have a John Deere Gator and I just load it all in the bed and ride right up to the bench and unload my stuff. I did walk the target stand out to 12 yards and then to 25 yards and walked out and brought it back.

My back was hurting so bad when I got back to the shooting bench I just had to sit there awhile before I could begin shooting. I have a ton of steel targets mostly swingers or targets that move a little while hit and settle back. I only shot the falling plates once. I set them up when I took the target stand there.

I wouldn't be able to shoot on a public range but on my own home range I can. I have been known on really bad days to just shoot sitting in the Gator at the metal targets without even getting out of it.

I was unsure how well my left hand I had surgery on would hold up but the mild recoil of the full size .38 was no issue for it. I'd not even think about a .44 or .45 for now.

Well Ron I really don't shoot that well these days. In my shooting last year that 2.75" group at 25 would have been a best of day for me most days. That I put 4 of the 5 in 1.25" was more the gun than me I think. That long barrel really helps me get a good sight picture and I was using sand bags for a rest. In my competition days I was able to shoot better free hand but those days are long gone. I dunno if I could keep them on the 12" steel gong now free hand.

I do hope to get out to my range to shoot more on the nice days ahead and might even try some free hand shooting. Trouble there is standing that long.
