Making A Ice Spud
« on: March 05, 2004, 12:53:38 AM »
I need an ice spud! You'd almost swear that we never had of any ice around here because nobody sells them. With the cost of shipping and everything else, I think I'll make one, and since I'm making one, I might as well customize it to suit me. So does anybody have any ideas for a good spud and what would you want in one ?

I prefer Russets myself.  Now if you soak them over night and then place in the freezer you'll have your own ICE SPUD in the morning.

BV I'll give a suggestion for the chopping edge...I'd use a piece of truck spring and weld it in a cut slot or sandwhiched between mild steel.  This will give you a pretty durable chopping edge, I think.

Hey go to this site http://www.anvilfire.com  and ask them what would be best..

If you can buy  a chisel buy the Millacs ice chisel or Blue point.  I believe they are just about the same but the have NO Equal except chain saw LOL... The Blue Point  comes from Canada i believe....The Millacs  can be bought at Fleet Farm stores or Shields sporting goods.   If you are going to make one look at the Millacs or Blue  point and go from there...They have staggered  edges and literally drop thru the ice.  I wouldnt go back to the old single edge blade anymore....  And this is fm an old fart with sore shoulders fm chippen bvr ponds all winter

Repeat after me.  Mille lacs, Mille lacs, Mille lacs.  Well you get the drift.  I have never used a blue point Rdfx but if I had to I would drop a $100 on the Jiffy chisel.  They are that good.
