45/70 "kid size loads"---- Pan lube picture/tricks
« on: May 20, 2021, 06:11:56 AM »
I have some 45/70 questions .I am loading for a original 1884 Trapdoor.  It is in good condition and shoots well.  I need a light load for the 10 year old. I have a Trail Boss load (12 to 13gr) but want him to start smelling smoke. We are not trying to kill the Griz. We will be shooting plates at about 40 yards. I am loading Lee 405gr hollow base pan lubed with SPG.  I have black data but nothing light. Also black is hard to find now but I have a lot of Pyrodex   both 2F and 3F. I am thinking 30gr + filler? What would be the lowest?  Should I put a card between powder and filler?  I have home lubed fiber wads for my  Colts. Might use those.  Filler is corn meal or old coffee grounds. The smell of coffee and black is good! Makes better smoke.-------My pan lube trick. I get a plastic funnel and trim the end until the bullet slips through  SNUGLY. Then file the outer edge like a wad punch. The funnel collects the bullets.    Thanks for the help.

One of the easiest ways to reduce recoil is reduce bullet weight. Dropping to a 300gr bullet would make a big difference. Just sayin'.

You are right. I only have one mold. I have good light loads with Trail Boss but that is running low with it needed for other loads That should not be black.  Also  I want the grand kids to learn to  shoot the black and smell it. They just got back from Gettysburg and may be going to Little Big Horn in a few weeks.  I think 7th cav used trapdoors. Not like my 84 but they look and work the same.  They will also be learning  1853 Enfield, Colt 51 navy (Wild Bills fav), and if they can lift it the Walker 47.

Black powder isn't hard to find, just have to look in the right places.
Lowrecoil load would be something around 60 grains of 1f, a .030 fiber wad and a 405 gr bullet.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

buddy used to shoot into a trap in his basement with a 4570 loaded with round balls and 2 grains of bullseye. he didnt even size them. Just used a lee dipper and punched the old primer out with a decapping die and reprimed and pushed a round ball in with his fingers. About as cheap as it gets. No need for even lube when using smokless at that level. personaly ive never seen a need for filler in any round.

Bullseye works as good as any

I just happened to have several
cans of Unique
And no,  you don't need cornmeal
or cream of wheat,  etc.

Thanks. I have good smokless  loads but want to conserve it. These are for little kids to plink with.  I have the first 3  test loads made up.  Next I will make up some round ball loads to try. Powder, wad, snug ball. No filler or crimp.  Also There used to be 45/70 shot shells. Was told to use 410 data.  All this will be Black or Subs.   Will post how all this works.
