Go to loads.
« on: August 06, 2021, 07:46:49 AM »
Was viewing another thread and got to think about what some folks go to loads are for popular CF pistols and revolvers. A load that always seems to work, is accurate and does all it needs to do. Simple yet effective is the idea.

A few I've used are fairly common loads in manuals and elsewhere, but here's some to start.

45 ACP, used to shoot a lot of NRA bullseye matches and early on I used 4 grs Bullseye powder, 200 gr. lead (usually H&G 68) with USGI cases and Win large primers. It shot well at 25 and 50 yards, never a hiccup in my Clark long slide.

Also used 4.5 and 5 grs in standard practice carry gun loads and plate shoots.

38 Special, real fond of 2.7 grs bullseye in my S&W 14 for informal one handed shooting, mostly at 25 yds. 148 gr wadcutter seated flush or into the crimp groove on cast they work well. Usually in Rem wadcutter brass with CCI sp primers.

44 Magnum, Fed case with CCI LP primer, 10.0 grs Unique with most any SWC 240-265 gr weight. Used for silhouette shooting years back and it always shot well, never left a ram standing when hit.

So, here's a few, there are more I'll get around to. How about a few of yours?

In .44 magnum used to be 24.0 grains of W296/H110 with any bullet of 240 grains but these days my arthritic hands can't hold onto such a load so I've given up the magnum. I do hope to develop a light load with 180 and 200/210 grain bullets. I got rid of all of my 240 and 300 grain JHPs.

For .44 Special which has now replace the magnum for me it's 7.5 grains of Unique and the Keith 429421 bullet. Even my arthritic hands can hold onto that one.

My all time favorite for .357 magnum was the original Hornady 125 JHP and 6.5 grains of Bullseye. When they came out with the XTP I found it worked just as well.

I won't list my old time favorite .38 Special load as it's a +P+ type that was originally for the .38/44 and isn't intended for standard .38 special guns tho I have used it plenty in them also.

These days I have a couple of new favorite .38 special loads that are mild but they are not in my head like the old stuff is.

Good info, my 44 loads were mostly with the 429421 also, about 260 grs. in the alloy I cast with. OAL was longer than max but they fit the cylinder of my SBH.

I've played with some 38-44 level loads but haven't tried enough, nor would post results due to someone using them in a weaker sixgun. Used mine in a 357 BTW.

Good loads to try. I've been starting to load some lead in 9mm, haven't done any 40 S&W in some time.

41 mag, well for casual practice 5 grs bullseye works. For a little more on bowling pins 7-8 grs Unique did quite well. I used a S&W 57 for silhouettes a loooong time ago, 2400 or Unique were the ones tried. Blue dot had been popular in the 41 but Alliant doesn't recommend it there anymore.

I'll have to sift thru my logs for rifle loads and start one there. It's been some time with jacketed but I've been running some cast loads lately.
