Just picked up a Marlin 39 A
« on: April 24, 2021, 05:29:38 PM »
I bought a new Marlin 39 A back in 1974 when I was a squirrel hunting fool. It has always been one of my most accurate 22 rimfires and if I remember correctly it was about $ 230 back then.
Fast forward about 47 years and I went to a gun show this past weekend and seen a really nice 39 A in 95 % condition that looked much better than my 1974 model and after some negotiation I bought it for $ 600.
I remember back when my first 39 A was new Marlin was using what they called the Mar shield finish on the stocks and now it has taken on a slightly yellowed look but still in good condition. The rifle I just bought was made in 1960 and the original stock finish was some kind of oil finish but 61 years later looks just like when if was new. The wood color on the older gun is a really nice dark black walnut and as soon as I picked it up to look at I knew this was a special gun and one you don’t often see in this condition. Thinking of the inflation in the past 60+ years I thought even though I didn’t need another 22 these old Marlin 39’s are classics and what better investment than one you can use and enjoy and a rifle that has always been the best 22 lever action built. They really are the Cadillac of 22 leverguns.

I've got a 1959 "Golden" 39A and it ain't for sale. Its killed hundreds of squirrels, and a few stray cats.

I was at another gun show today and almost bought a Marlin M 1897 which is the original gun that became the M 39.
It was a project gun that needed some parts and the bore was in rough shape and after thinking on it I decided not to buy it.
The main reason is I just recently moved and my lathe and mill are just sitting in my garage and not set up yet as I need to run 220 V power and make room to set them up and install lighting and then there is at least 4 other projects guns I have that need finished first anyway. I am not as quick in getting things done as I was just a few years ago so it’s probably best I didn’t get it.

I moved into this house about 2 months ago and haven't got my shop set up either. At 71 years old, things are harder.
