   Yes, I understand the old connotation of the numerals "69",  but this seems much different, since it is presented with a series of letters, which in themselves seem to mean nothing.

  The "offensive" plate reads "69PWNDU"... Can you explain why that number/letter combination so "offensive" ?

   Either I am verbally naive, or I just don't plumb the vernacular depths where some folks venture..  ???  ::)

Really? For anyone seeing that plate are they going to actually figure out that its offensive?  I didn't understand the meaning of it either. Sometimes mountains are made out of molehills.

You have the last two letters out of order, so there's that.

In gaming circles, "pwnd" is an intentional misspelling of "owned", as in utterly defeated. So, "pwndu" is "owned you" in gamer parlance. I have seen references to that combination of letters for many years now, so I can confirm the veracity of it.

Now, why the 69 is in front of it I can't say - I'm not convinced by the explanation given in the article about the plate owner being an astronomy buff and first moon landing being in 1969, but whatever.  1st amendment should trump anyone's feelings over any offense at the plate, whether real or feigned.  Shoot, I'm betting there are state-issued plates with some variation of 69 either followed or preceded by a character combination that would be considered offensive by some.

  Thanks for your input, Justahooter..I just can't figure how somebody would be "offended" by what seems to be a jumble of mixed numerals and letters.

It may have to do with they are calling the new norm if they see something that can be construed by someone as offensive they will not let you use it. Remember Trumps MAGA hats some said they were offended by them. People have just gone plain nuts and the left is leading them down a path that will destroy America as we have known it. Anything the nut case left does offends me but no one does anything about it.

JMHO-  a non-issue

If they wanted a real news story,
they should come ride around town
with me for an hour while I point out
all the phoney printed paper dealer
tags that people made up and are
using on their vehicles.
There was a task force that was dealing
with this illegal practice, but they were
disbanded because they were catching
too many non whites afoul of the law
and it caused an outcry of "RACISM!"

These people now have gotten to
where they don't even bother to print
a newer one when the old one is
long expired since they know they'll
get away with it.
Just like the shoplifters
