Hunting Turkey With A Bow
« on: February 23, 2004, 10:37:28 AM »
I am going to try to hunt for turkeys with my bow this year and was wondering where do you shoot it?  :?  The chest, head, base of the wing, what I have no earthly clue. I would really appreciate all the help you can give me. :?

From what I understand (and please realize I yet do not bowhunt for turkey,) is that you want to hit near the base of the wing. BUT the important thing is that you want to use field/practice points and not broadheads as they will do too much meat damage.

Would a 75 grain Muzzy 3 blade do too much damage. I dont want to have to chase thing 500 yards. I want it to lay there and flop around. :?

Brian,

Not sure about Tenessee, but here in Arizona you have to use a broadhead the same as any other big game.  Fall turkey is over the counter archery here and coinsides with deer and squirel.

Last year my son took a hen with a 100 grain Muzzy body shot.  Didn't damage the meat to what he told me.  He said it flopped around a bit after it dropped from the tree he shot it in.

It would be a cold day in you know where before I tried to kill a turkey with a field point.  Only use a broadhead.  They say to aim directly above the legs of a broadside bird and try to break their wings or shoot them int he center of the back to paralize them and not have them run off.  When shot broadside expect them to run about the same distance as a deer.  Just pray they don't fly.  Tat complicates things majorly.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer with his buddies for a lifetime.

This isn't a beer gut!!  Its a feul tank for a sex machine!!

I guess the concensus wins.  Im not sure exactly where I saw the hint to use field points, but I think it was actually in a book I read.  But like I said before I have not hunted turkey with bow yet.  I want to try in the next year or two though.

Thanks for all the input. Now I am faced with yet another decision to make  ........what broadheads to use. If you all have any suggestions please let me know. I had thought about using 75 grain Muzzy 3 blades but it might be too light so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I would think your 75 grain Muzzys would be just fine.  If you wanted you could add an adder ring behind the broadhead on the shaft, but I think you will do just fine with just your broadhead.

The aiming point is the base of the wings, or the base of the beard if he's facing you. Get a book on turkey hunting, and look at a diagram of the vitals. A turkey archery target will help too. The kill zone is small, so use a range finder, know your bow, and most importantly, know your limitations and don't exceed them. Most of the turkeys I've seen shot with an arrow will run off or try to fly. Don't take your eyes off them if they run. If it's a heart/lung hit they won't go far. It's not like shooting them in the head with a shotgun - they usually don't just drop and flop. If you read in a book to use field points or blunts, I would throw that book away! Use a good cut on contact broadhead with the largest diameter you can find. I use the Steel Force titaniums. They shoot just like a field points in my bow. It's tough - but fun. Good luck!

Tom,
Glad to hear that your son got a turkey, but you said it flopped around when it fell from the tree. I didn't think that it was legal to shoot a roosted turkey in any state.
