Funny...for farmers..
« on: August 07, 2021, 05:03:17 AM »
.
Here's a city dude..says he 's from Washington, DC..   He apparently bought an abandoned farm in Vermont, and is setting up trail cams.

Comical to see him go through the woods and "identify" old farm machinery, etc.  First 5 minutes are funny, but so is the rest..rather a 'babes in the woods' scenario..

"plow" huh? He doesn't know a sh*t spreader from shinola. And these are the city elites who think they know what's best for us country folks.

You guys would complain if they hung you with a new rope.  See anything "useful" in this video - no.  Negatively comment - why?  What does that solve?  Move along Citizens.  Nothing to see here.

He has the right dog that doesn't want to walk over 100 yards from the house.

I remember when:
1.)  I didn't know "**** from shinola" about hobby farming - and still don't by comparison.
2.)  I had zero experience as a shooter and hunter.
3.)  My "rural friends" had fun at my expense.
4.)  I had no tractor or implements.
5.)  I had just bought my own land.
6.)  The sheriff said not to leave anything of value in the woods.

I've had 30+ years to learn the little I know about rural living and farming.  Still, I get by and I seriously doubt that fellow is creating change that affects rural lives in any way.  He is just trying to take some wildlife pictures, which if he gets any I might like to see.  The rest of the video - not interesting and a waste of my time, but I am not going to "crucify him" for making it.  Zero views is more like it deserves.  Now, through this thread, he'll get many MORE views than if it had been ignored in the first place.

   For Landowner..

No malice intended...just having fun..   Probably the same kind of fun a lot of housewives would have, watching me trying to cook a full course Thanksgiving dinner ! ;)  ;D

...But then, I won't be trying that any time soon.

Don't ya just love it when a citidot comes to the country!

One just bought the property across the road from me, first thing he did was hit a power pole with a tractor and knock the power out for a day!  lol

The guy from the power company told me, "he's trying to blame it on the power pole being old, I'm NOT buying it!"

I hope they sent him a bill!

LOL...What difference if it were old...he STILL HIT the thing !

I've seen some of those folks complain about too many farmers posting their land against hunting...

then, a few years later, they buy some land of their own. then what do we see..posted signs every 10 feet !  ;D

Some farmers here are beginning to play the lease to hunt game.  They have a perfect right to do it, since it is their land, but I still don't like to see that coming here.

That's pretty funny, looks like a nice stretch of land though.  I give the guy credit for learning to grow his own food and live that type of lifestyle from scratch.  But for crying out loud,,, a plow???
To think that these same type of people, who knew little to nothing about farming and homesteading headed out to the wilderness when this country was being created westward.  Putting everything they had in a wagon to go and break sod and make a living at it.  Wonder what percentage lived past first year...

People moving around doesn't bother
me as long as they put the notion of
"BACK HOME" aside and blend in and
adopt the ways of the place they
moved to.  Otherwise nobody will
ever be happy

Exactly what I said...   Same as John Deere developing the first all steel moldboard plow.

   Cyrus McCormick and the reaper...

Maybe it's late so I'm not getting your answer, but john deere "stole" the first steel plow from a blacksmith, then they reproduced it and sold it...  lol

  Is that what you meant??

From my understanding, John Deere was a blacksmith..as was Cyrus McCormick.

I visited the Cyrus McCormick homestead one time.  At that time, it was a museum run by the U of Virginia

they were planning on opening the museum as a "living museum"..and the manager invited me back to use old Cyrus' anvil.

Sadly, I never remade the connection, however.

Deere "bought" a steel plow from a blacksmith, AND he took it, but never paid for it!  I'd call that stealing it!

Deere then copied it and marketed it, and it went on from there...

Deere doesn't invent much of anything, they copy and steal designs, like Kinze's planter design...  Deere copied it, and it almost broke Kinze to last, sueing deere big time, BUT they ended up winning big time too!!

There are lots of cases on record of things like that...

Could be...  Fireplace items are a constant call for today's blacksmiths.  Most were quite complicated in order to produce a pleasant design

I developed a single piece, attractive design...soon other smiths were doing that same design in my area...and it has probably spread far and wide by now.

They don't owe me anything.  But then, I am notorious about being more concerned with the art, than the money !

How would you feel IF I came to you, bought one of your designs, then not only never pay you for it.

BUT I patented it and then made a huge amount of money for it, taking full credit for the design!

"Cockle burr"?  More like a Florida sandspur...

I get into a melancholy state of mind, join the downed side, root for the underdog, Mentor through what I think I know, give that freely away (I can take it with me, but then no one is wiser based on my experience), and still am troubled at times.  I have been thoughtless, insensitive, and uncaring, but even I wouldn't have made THAT video.  Someday I will die...

Off topic: When I was 14 we went to the Isle of palms in SC and my dad parked right next to the beach.
I jumped out of the car and was gonna run down and dive into the water.
I made it about 30 feet before I could get stopped and my feet were full of sand spurs.
my dad brought my shoes and supported me while I cleaned the spurs off and donned my shoes.
I did find a lot of sand dollars though. :)

That's been done to me before..on a trailer jack stand that I GAVE to a man..  Not sure how his patent application went, but I happened to see the drawings he was about to submit, lying on his desk..  No big deal !

He is a good guy otherwise, and I think his nephew was behind the attempt.  I don't know if he or his nephew ever made it big.  I haven't seen the stand on any trailers yet.

In any case, God knows, and if there were any greed or malice, He will take care of it.
