As the Taliban took control of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, on Sunday, the terrorist group also seized Bagram Air Base, freeing thousands of U.S. prisoners, including some of the Taliban's most hardened fighters and senior Al Qaeda operatives.

U.S. forces handed control of the airfield, located on the outskirts of Kabul, over to the Afghan government in early July. Afghan forces at the base surrendered to the Taliban on Sunday, as other Taliban troops stormed the U.S. Embassy in Kabul and the presidential palace.


Afghan officials estimated that the U.S. left about 5,000 to 7,000 prisoners in the air base when the Americans left, according to Axios.


The Pul-e-Charkhi prison, the largest in Afghanistan, contained a maximum-security cell block for Al Qaeda and Taliban prisoners. Afghan government troops surrendered control of the base without a fight.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley told senators that the freed prisoners will speed up a previous assessment of how quickly terrorist groups will reconstitute themselves in Afghanistan, Axios reported.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., asked Milley and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin whether they would revise a June assessment they sent to Congress warning of a "medium" risk of terrorist groups reconstituting themselves in the country within two years.

"Yes," Milley said. He told Graham that he would have to assume the terrorists would return to their full strength more quickly. He offered to brief the senators in a classified setting.

Well, I guess all the Afghan folks (interpreters ect.) that collaborated with the United States government forces now know that the United States government cannot be trusted to do what they say they'll do.
Afghanistan does not want, and never has wanted democracy. They want what they've always had. A theocracy older than Islam itself.

Unfortunate that the previous administration negotiated a "ceasefire" with the Taliban based on the US getting out completely by May of 2021...  It gave the Taliban a year and a half to negotiate the complete surrender of the country by everyone in the Afghan military...  Way to go Mike Pompeo !!!

  Well, a smooth pull out could have been accomplished, had people been smart enough to vote for the Trump admin, rather than the Biden bunch.
 
  How would a Trump pullout have been different? First off, he probably would beat the May deadline!  He would act while the Taliban personnel were gone home, during the winter months.. why pull out while the Taliban is at full strength in the field?

   It is highly  likely that Trump would have started pulling in our allies from Helmand, and all the other provinces, to prevent the butchery.

   As he gathered them in..he would also be gathering our supplies and military equipment in, ready for transfer to neutral countries to await shipment, or resale to "friendlies"!

   One thing that is high priority for all military, right down to the company level.  IF IN DANGER OF BEING OVER RUN, DO NOT LEAVE ANY OPERABLE WEAPONRY FOR THE ENEMY!

   That was our instructions in Germany during the cold war.  If the went up, we expected to hold the Russians at the Rhine, but if it looked like we could not do so..we were to disable anything we had to abandon.

  We had a supply of thermite grenades available to do just that!

  Is Bumbles Biden going to allow the Taliban to have perfectly good, operable military equipment array ?

   If you can't ship it out..a thermite grenade will burn completely through an engine, a breechblock of a tank or artillery piece.  They can be made useless in very short order !
   
   Sheesh!  During our revolutionary war, if they had to abandon an artillery piece to the enemy, they at least spiked the touch holes, and if they had time, they broke wheel spindles and fired dramatically overcharged loads.
