We have a pair of the 10/22s and none of the others, but, in a couple of more days there will be, at the gun store, a Remington model 581 with a heavy barrel and Timney trigger that will take everything from deer on down.

Every game warden here that I've had a
casual conversation with has told me
that about 90% of the real deer poachers that
they've interacted with were using a
scoped 22LR. Just a plain jane 22
with a cheap scope,  not any special
target anything . Lotta legitimate ranchers
and ranchhands using 22's also

I smile when I hear or read these articles or conversations concerning appropriate calibers for this and that.
Growing up down here in the 50s and 60s with small meat packers where you either done the butcherin yourself, or took it to them. EVERY butcher shop back then had usually a single shot 22. Cattle, hogs, goats, or sheep all got the same treatment.

When I was a young man I ran with the dogs & killed big hogs with a knife. Or sometimes a model 18 S&W 22lr.

Retired and back in my home state of Florida I shoot most everything I hunt with a 22 rifle or pistol. Deer are not legal to kill with a rimfire so I use a 223 usually.

Well sure when you're holding the muzzle to the forehead a 22lr is pretty efficient, waste of bullets actually when you could just use a hammer or maul...  That's what we used anyway when butchering on the farm.  Worked better on hogs and a 22, they have a hard skull and if you hit them at wrong angle it just slides between bone and hide and they do not like that one bit...

Had a guy come out to buy a hog one time and was going to kill it and bleed it at our place and take it home to butcher.  He insisted that he kill the hog with his 22, so fine...  Shot it once right in the sweet spot and the hog screamed to bloody helll, shot it again and same result.  My dad said, "let me see that gun" and checked the bullets only to find out it was bird shot... The hog got the maul next.

I've watched my Dad kill many hogs by putting his revolver barrel in their ear.    Instant death.

I've killed 4 deer in my life and each one could have been killed with my 22 rifle.
Somebody once said, get as close as you can and then get closer.   That's how I hunt.

If you have a couple catch dogs you just slip a 7” blade over the sternum and twist. Blood flows out like you turned on a a water hose. You can watch a big hog wilt and die in a few seconds.     But you better be young and fast.   

If you use a 22 revolver to brain the hog. You’ve got to know where the brain is. I like behind the ear shot angled into the brain, depending which angle their standing. But sometimes you half to work with what they give you. The frontal shot works just fine but you need to consider if he’s looking up at you or down. Aim accordingly.

  Yes they do, they use FMJ bullets that are illegal to use for hunting and they use dogs to keep the bear busy, while they keep shooting until they get the job done.

Have wanted one for years, but never had the money when one was available. Closest I've come are the Savage rifle/shotguns.

Well Mule, everything is relative. I’m seeing very nice drillings offered for sale for about half what they were selling for 10-15 years ago. That still may not fit your price range, And it no longer fits mine.

Just do it
I've gotten rid of some things I thought
I'd never part with, and it didn't hurt like
I would have thought.  The firearms I've
sold were just sitting not doing any good.
Sit down and make a list of some kind
if you need to.  My criterion was what was
the last time I used a particular firearm
and when I anticipated using it and
how much fodder I had to to use with it

Well nothing wrong with that
way of thinking. I used to buy
whatever I saw that I had a
hankering for, and never asked
the price. But this last part of my
life I realized that I can only fit
so many personal items in my
truck if I have to for whatever
reason. The things I've sent down
the road were just sitting, and I
prefer the cash in my pocket to
providing homes for wayward
spiders
