.
I was in my smithy, forging a a sign holder for a nearby Bible conference, when I heard the announcement on the radio.
Right away i wondered.."What is an airliner doing over Manhattan anyway?" Remembering that it was in 1945, when a B25 bomber flew into th eEmpire State building...cancelling such flights over NY City
When they announced the second one...I harbored no doubts!
Another memorable event..the death of JFK!
I was stationed in Germany, had my family with me, and lived in the town, rather than in post quarters.
I arrived home from work that day..and took the elevator to our 4th floor apartment.. We were the only Americans in building.
As i got off the elevator Gisela, a teenage girl from the 3rd floor greeted me with the news. "President Kennedy, ..kugel, gewesen tot !" (kugeo, gewesen, tot..= "bullet, pistol, dead"! ... I could only utter.."please don't tell me!"
We troops of course, went on alert right away..half expecting Russian armored divisions to try to shoot the Fulda gap.
Fortunately, I had no doubts but come necessary, my country would care for my family..and take them home..
