Rod storage ???
« on: March 13, 2010, 04:27:05 AM »
How do you store your tackle?

Much to my wife's distaste... I have amassed quite a number of rods. (More than I need, but don't tell her!!) Storage is getting a problem. As my numbers grew so did the cost. I have a couple hi$$ setups so standing them in the garage isn't an option for me. I have relegated them to the unfinished part of my  basement. I discovered that some 2" PVC pipe, cut 2" long then a 1" slice out of the side makes a nice "holder" when screwed to the rafters.

My trouble is I have close to 30 freshwater setups and over 35 salt....  :o ::) I don't have THAT much ceiling space...

What do you guys do?? Thanks for the help.

You REALLY don't wanna hear about my storage system. It is called "random dispersement".

The way ya do it is to stand them where ever ya find a spot big enough. They are ramdomly scattered around the garage and storage room and likely some up at the barn. I don't have nearly as many as you as I have no saltwater rods at all but I do have some of Matt's here as well since the only place he fishes these days is down at my pond.

I have nothing I'd call "high dollar". I doubt I've paid more than $30-$40 for any rod or reel I have.

Bill,
That's what I did and it contributed to my poor accounting of what I actually had!!!

Here is a shot of 90% of them... There is a double row along the rafters. One row are pointing at the other so they fit like interlaced fingers.

I hang mine from the tips on the garage wall.

Mine are on the ceiling much like yours are (just not quite so many). I used 1/2" rope . Nail it to the ceiling with a loop of sorts between the nails to slip the butt into. Do the same for the other end. I alternate one one way then the reel on the other side for the next. this allows me to tighten things up a bit...If i may ask, where are you located?

Here is what I came up with for the second layer...

Its 12x30" frames. I made from 2" wide 3/4" plywood. Glued and screwed with a cross brace for strength. Then mounted on a couple hinges. So I can let it down to access the ones beneath...

I could get a couple more rods on each frame, but three works for me and keeps it lighter.

They say you are supposed to change out your line every year.  You must have to take out a second mortgage on the house. ;D

LOL.. Your rite!!!  I get at least 4 years out of a spool of braided line.. Two years, then I switch reels so what was buried in the spool is now on top.. then I pitch it...  Mono is every year IF I use it allot, otherwise its every two years... Then wit this many, there is a number that don't see use in a given year.. those are just fine as is...  ::) ;D ;)

Do you like your braided line?  Do you think fish can see it?  I recently changed from mono to braided.  Now I can't catch fish. ??? ???  Is it because of the line or am I holding my tongue wrong?

Oh you DEFINITELY need to hold your mouth rite!! LOL...

I don't run the braid rite to the hook. I use a swivel, usually a bearing swivel then a couple feet of fluorocarbon to the hook. With weary stripers I use up to 5feet of fluoro... others as little as 18".

. . Sold all of my flyrods except 2.
I still have some. They just swapped
duties and became jigging rods.
I still have a couple of fly reels and a
few poppers and bugs, but they went
into semi retirement

The majority of my rods are stored
as most of the others do,  the old
fashioned corner-o-the-room rod
organization system.
What salt boat rods I have left
are residing in the rafters

I have given away most of mine. What I kept, around a dozen, are stored in simple screw in hooks along the ceiling of my store room in the garage. I have a never used ultralite that will get some use before long at the small lake at the city park pretty soon when the state starts stocking it with trout. I gave up serious fishing several years ago and sold my boat.

I'd recommend you get a "crappie " rod and a good UL
spinning reel with it. Very versatile rod and has enough
backbone to handle the occasional bass or catfish that
will bite

I kept a 7' 9" which I'd had since 1956, and a 12' that will throw flies, jigs, live bait, and the kitchen sink. :)

The other half got me a nice bag for storing rods and reels vertically; now I have not done real fishing in quite some time, and when I took out one of my better baitcast reels it showed signs of being dry and needing a go over. (could do it myself but will send it in anyway) .

Well that was a couple of years ago and money was tight but now I can afford to send them all in, BUT, I could not find them any where (the other half said she had no idea where they were.
I had to literally dig out some items for working on the side walk this summer and VIOLA, found the whole shebang under a pile of stuff in a remote corner of the basement where she had piled stuff I wanted to throw out but she did not. (After I piles the pile in the basement, she actually tossed this summer most of the stuff)

It is amazing though how back when one did a fair amount of fishing, and buying rods for future use, that as time goes by you forget you had them, AND where you put them.
I was cleaning out behind a wall , we put in, in the basement to hide the old cistern that a former owner had butchered, and I found three rods I did not even remember having any more. (I also found a couple of bottles of wine bought twenty years ago.) 8)

I've been doing some trashcan stuffing myself,
and I'd forgot about 4 rod/reel combos I'd bought
and stashed away when we were fishing salt marsh
so much. I guess I was thinking about the ones I'd
been using being about ready for the junk pile
seeing as the salt is so hard on equipment.
Those 4 have never been used or spooled up
with line. Probably no warranty left either even
though they're unused
