If you hadn't been seeing him like it for months I would have said burdock.

If it was a dog, I'd say mange. Sure doesn't look good does it?

Sort of looks like he's shedding his summer coat.  But, I've never seen a deer do that before.

I'm wondering if its lice and the deer is rubbing it to relieve the itch.
Hair in that area of a deers back is longer, and could be ruffled up.

Probably scratching an itch. Can't tell. Pictures are too blurry.

I am suggesting bot fly warbles.  As a kid on the farm, in summertime, kept a close watch on our Holsteins, for lumps on their backs.
The lumps contained grubs, which were a larval stage of deposits by Bot flies.  We would have to e a "Dr Pimple Popper" whenever we found one...or two...or three..

Althjough bot flies can lay eggs in most mammals, including humans, I have only seen them in cows.  We watched the cows for them daily during milking, so never had a collection such as this buck has.

Here is a video showing larve removal..  We just popped them out like big pimples...

It could be warts.
Deer can be infested with them but they are normally around the the head and neck.
Or, it could be Ironglows’s bot flies.
I’ve seen those on squirrels in warm weather.

Possibly hide damage from fighting
or where a big feline was clawing at
the deer and didn't get the job done?

The bright side to bot flies is that they are NOT touching the flesh.
They are in the skin only and the meat is perfectly safe to eat.
Folks have mistakenly assumed that bot flies was the reason that I didn't squirrel hunt in warm weather.
But the real reason was/is, chiggers. :)

I have and it's quite common around here especially late spring.
