Senator Tuberville Supports Bipartisan Bill to Help Wildlife, Prevent Extinctions Nationwide

Montgomery, AL — Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville has signed onto a bipartisan wildlife conservation bill, the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, that will dedicate $1.4 billion annually to state-led efforts to help at risk wildlife species nationwide.

“Wildlife conservation is an issue that unites all Americans,” said Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). “Our staff works tirelessly to manage game and nongame species in the state. As one of the most biologically diverse states in the nation, Alabama is home to many imperiled species. Currently, there is no dedicated source of funding for the habitat improvement and management of nongame wildlife. We appreciate Senator Tuberville in cosponsoring this commonsense bill that will make an unprecedented difference for so many species in our state.”

The bill will send approximately $25 million annually to the ADCNR, which the agency will use to implement its wildlife action plan. More than 350 species found in
Alabama would benefit, including the red hills salamander, shoal bass, red-cockaded woodpecker, Gulf sturgeon, black pine snake and numerous mussel species.

“Alabama has a tremendous natural heritage and this bill will ensure that our children and grandchildren will continue to enjoy it,” said Chuck Sykes, Director of ADCNR’s Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division. “We thank Senator Tuberville for cosponsoring this fiscally responsible effort to help at risk wildlife in Alabama and across the nation.”

At least 15% of the funds will be used to help species already designated as endangered or threatened. Federally recognized tribal nations would share $97.5 million annually to fund wildlife conservation efforts on tribal lands.

The House version of the legislation currently has 119 supporters, including 26 Republicans.

I have a problem on how they implement some of these programs.  In the late 80's, the red cockaded woodpecker was a big deal at Ft Bragg NC.  The best map was the red cockaded woodpecker special, which had every nesting tree marked, both on the map and the tree.  I don't recall which was which, but they used single and double bands to mark the trees, one meant a nest, the other a boundary.  They closed a few ranges due to the birds, including a new multi million dollar range, and made it illegal to do anything around the nesting trees, especially cut or climb them.  The problem was, the ranges was what attracted them, they knew where they were safe, so when a range closed, they would move on to an open one.  I just don't see how these birds are considered endangered, I see them all the time.  I won't say where as they might try and put these places off limits  ::)

Yes on the pine plantations.
This bill is just another way to cash in on the deep pockets of the feds which comes from my pockets and yours.
The taxes on sporting goods has taken care of these things for decades.

Just say NO to all Federal government spending bills. As far as wildlife goes, the number one reason they are suffering is because of lack of habitat. Pine trees back east and fir trees here in the west provide zero food for animals. If you truly want to help wildlife survive, then prohibit timber companies from cutting and spraying poison to all hardwoods and plant life that sustain them. Wouldn't cost tax payers a damn cent that way. but don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

Does this mean we will have more jobs, public lands, business ventures and oil & gas production shut down?
