Triple 7 vs. Pyrodex RS
« on: March 08, 2004, 04:18:44 AM »
I have been using Pyrodex RS (loose powder and pellets) in my CVA inline.  I recently came across some Triple 7.  I have read that Triple 7 will produce higher pressures and velocities at lower powder charges.  What charge can I expect to use changing over to Triple 7?

Funny you should ask cause I was just on the Hodgdon sight checking. They say 85% for 777 but say nothing about this for Pyrodex.

My question is in a Huntsman which has given better results??

Just in case I was not clear this is exactly what the web sight said:

Triple Seven is a high energy product designed to provide the muzzleloading hunter with higher velocities when used in the same VOLUME as black powder. To duplicate a black powder load velocity using Triple Seven, you must decrease the powder charge by 15%

I switch from Pyrodex RS to Triple 7 in my T/C Renegade. I was using 90 gr. by volume of Pyrodex and now am using 80 gr. by volume of Triple 7. The velocity is almost the same with the different charge. But one thing I noticed is how clean the barrel is after using the Triple 7 compared to the Pyrodex RS. I am not one that likes to hot rod a muzzleloader, I like slow and big bullets. :)

Yeah, there's only so much you can do with a muzzleloader.  I try to save the hot rodding for the .223's :)

But, I've got a pretty good load now, and would like to try to get it as close as possible.
