Welcome 30 Super Carry: a new caliber for 2022

Posted on January 5, 2022 • by David Reeder

The pre-SHOT frenzy of new releases has seen the announcement of a brand new pistol caliber — the “30 Super Carry”. The announcement of the new cartridge stirred up all sorts of discussion on forums, Reddit threads, and all the other usual places.

BLUF: the 30 Super Carry cartridge was designed to be more compact than 9mm NATO and more effective than .380 ACP. Manufacturers say the new round performs as well as the 9mm while providing substantially greater magazine capacity — usually an increase of +2 rounds in a typical/standard magazine.

30 Super Carry provides a 12-round capacity in a standard, single-stack 1911 magazine.

It will be hard for many people to get past the notion that a cartridge utilizing less energy and a smaller hollow point cavity to put smaller holes in bad guys (than a 9mm) is, in fact, better than 9mm. There will also be the obvious, even partially justified, complaints about the release of a new caliber during an ongoing ammunition shortage (real or perceived) continues.

That’s not to say the new cartridge isn’t worthwhile. I’m just acknowledging ahead of time what the two biggest pushback issues will be.

30SC Shield EZ

30SC Ammunition

A number of ammunition companies will be producing 30 Super Carry ammunition, including Federal, Remington, CCI, and Speer.

Guys, I normally post entire articles but this one is LONG, there is much more at the link at the top to include videos. This is all I'm gonna post on this for now. Graybeard

Well, it weaker than the 9mm which is pretty weak, so you've told me everything I needed to know.
I'm also guessing, the high pitched muzzle report will be deafening.
I know the M1 carbine round in a pistol is, even with a 6" barrel.

100 grains .312 bullet at 1250fps, about the same as 32-20 from revolvers.  A nice field/woods rambling carry piece.  Wonder what it do from a 18" barrel.  Think I would stick with the 32-20 for the rifle and a 40 S&W for self protection.

Another one? Why on Earth would anyone buy something like this? Two rounds  is not much. What not just go to a .22 and be done with it? A solution in search of a problem, if you ask me.

For light duty I'll occasionally carry an Airweight +p, but generally I carry a 4" 686 with a hot 125 grain jhp in 357 magnum.
I used  to teach the double tap, and always hated it.

This came up on YouTube from Federal as a recommended video. I commented that they need to make enough ammo for the calibers already out there.

I am as big of gun geek as anyone,  but until the shortage is over I can't see producing new calibers.

100%!
Get the ammo out for existing calibers.

I'm thinking this is just a .32 H&R Magnum without the rimmed case. At least that's about what the ballistics equate to. I think it would be a fun little gun in that Shield EZ but they need to use Shield Plus magazine tech and up the capacity to 15 rounds.

I sure agree about getting the ammo out for what's already out there but honestly the ammo makers are doing just that. It's just getting bought up faster than it can be made. I think a LOT of it is going to Gun Broker and other such auction sites rather than to shooters same as powder, primers and such are.

Now that Big Green is back up and running maybe they will catch up with current demand. That left a HUGE HOLE when Remington went belly up. They are now back to full production tho. Lots of new ammo makers are popping up, seems every week I see e-mails about ammo from companies I've never heard of.

I think that's why bullets are so hard to come by, everyone and his brother is now an ammo company making and selling ammo. They are eating up the bullet supply and I guess a large chunk of the powder and primer supply.

The makers of all the components to make ammo are pumping it out in greater quantity than ever. True government entities are buying in record volume also but someone else is buying up absolutely enormous quantities of powder, primers and bullets.

It's not like I don't get excited about new guns and calibers, I do. But it just seems like a bad time to release this. Heck I might even buy one. I have several 32 acp pistols, a 32 Smith and Wesson  and a 32 H&R mag. But I would love to see, some 38 special,  45 Colt and 357 mag in stock everywhere before they start up a line for this ammo.

i had a 30 carbine blackhawk. Most painful muzzle blast ive ever seen in a handgun. that even includes 454s 460s IF it emulates the 32 mag its going to be near as bad. Had a gp101 4 inch 32 mag and with full power jacketed bullets it waa darned near as loud as the 30 carbine. Maybe they can come out with some load with a faster burning powder to get those velocitys but the typical powders like 110 lilgun ect make those guns into flame throwers. Then a guy would have to be a card short of a full deck to buy one today when its tough enough to find ammo in standard chamberings. Good luck finding ammo for that thing at your local gun shop.

I’ll stay with the .45acp for autos. .38 /.357 and .44spec /.44 mag for wheel guns.

If I'm right about it being basically just a .32 Mag without the rim I could load it using my .32 Mag dies and I have a Lyman mold that casts a 115 grain SWC with GC that used to be super accurate in my 10" TC barrel I used in NRA silhouette competition. I bet I could get it operational with what I have on hand.

I don't have any Win231 on hand but I do have a good supply of the newer Win244 which seems to be just a revised version of 231. My old load wasn't that loud but then I always wore hearing protection when shooting it.

The case is .247" shorter than the 32 magnum.  The magnum develops almost exactly the same velocity at 21,000 psi, wonder what pressure the SC operates at.

About 2-3 years ago a 7.65 was announced that ran about 2000 fps, but have not seen it mentioned since the one ad in one of my magazines.
