Magellan Sportrak-Opinions and Suggestions???
« on: February 23, 2004, 10:13:51 AM »
I am first time shopping for a GPS.  I think I would like the Magellan Sportrak.  It seems as though they have several models with different bells and whistles.  I would primarily use one for the following 3 reasons

1.  General hunting (starting points, way points, stand locations, compass).
2.  Take Long/Lat points on farm field corners to calculate acreage (I have a program that will take these points and give acreage totals).
3.  Travel state and county roads.

Will any of the sportrak models accomplish this? Or should I look at a specific one such as sportrak map or sportrak pro.

Also, is there another make or model that I am overlooking?

Finally, I would like to stay under $200 if that is possible.  Thanks in advance for any responses.

I have never used a Magellan gps.  I have been using a Garmin the last couple of years.  I suggest that what ever brand gps you buy have at least 8 megs of memory for storying maps.

While the gps that I have came with a good N.American base map it has been nice to load topo maps on it.
There is a learning process to effectively using a gps.  Do not throw your compass and map away!

I've got the Magellan SporTrak Pro. It's got a good basemap in it, plus 23mb of space for maps from the Magellan MapSend series of mapping programs. I'm not too sure about the SporTrak Map, as far as features. I guess that it would just depend on how big/how many maps you want to load as to which on you should buy. I went with the Pro, since it offered the most flexability for my uses.  MI VHNTR
