12" deer hunting bbl for encore?
« on: March 16, 2004, 06:18:11 AM »
Can I get a good deer caliber in a 12" or 10" bbl?  The 15" are just a little too long to carry.  What cal would you suggest for that short of a bbl?

You didn't mention much about your expectations for the use of the pistol on your deer hunt.  What sort of ranges do you expect to shoot?  Do you want a cartridge that will double for some other purpose?

I'll set some of the parameters and say that we'll limit shots <200 yards, which seems to be fairly normal for many people's hunting experiences.  The calibers that immediately jump to my mind as great deer cartridges are the 7-30 Waters & .30-30.  You could certainly gain some velocity by going to a .260, 7-08, or .308 and you would also get some more muzzle blast.  Personally I think cases based on the .308 would be about the max for a 12" barrel as I think larger cases would only buy you more muzzle blast without a huge difference in velocity.  I would think that a 7-08 would easily be capable of taking a deer at 250 yards if you are skillful to deliver the goods on the target.

If your distances are <125 yards, then I'd probably be more inclined to pick a big bore cartridge with a flat nosed cast bullet.  Something with a bore size of at least .41" like a .44 mag, .454 Casull, .480 Ruger, .444, .45-70 and similar type rounds.  These loads eliminate the whole variable of bullet performance by cutting a big channel through both sides.  Their only limitation tends to be trajectory as you have to factor in lots of drop as the ranges get out there.  Good luck!

Let me clarify.  I have done tons of hunting and just recently got into handgunnign.  I have a 22-250 15" bbl.  I love it but it is too long so my next bbl will be a 10 or 12.  I like the 243 7mm08 and 308 but I an not sure if and how they will shoot out of a short bbl.  TC only sells them in 15".

I believe T/C used to make a 10" version of the 7mm-08.  If you look around on the web, you might be able to find one for a descent price.

I have a 12" cannon breech (aka lone eagle) in .308.Factory ammo is very loud and not all that much more speedy than my reloads. With a good rest and scope ,and alot of practice, you could kill deer to around 200 yards. I had a 10" 30-30 t/c and felt the drop was a little to much for long range hunting.I used this barrel for "sillywets".There ,you know the range to the targets ahead of time! With the right amount of money you can get anything! In the Encore a 6.5Rem, 7-08, 308 barrel would be great for deer to 200 yards IF YOU CAN DO YOUR PART.
Hey! Bob Milek killed mule deer with the 7tc/u at nearly 200 yards! Certainly less than 7-08 power, but are you a Bob Milek?     jh
