Gettysburg is recognized as the turning point of the Civil War.  Gettysburg was Lee's most northerly point of penetration..after that it was all downhill.

Lee must have been in the clutches of some kind of illness, because he was such a great tactician..yet failed to seize the high ground..  High ground is always a prize to take whenever possible, yet Lee ignored several chances to take it.

Some rebels did occupy Big Round top for a time, but not in strength and they did not set up any artillery.
Meanwhile, the union forces take possession of Little Round Top, and a couple guns are positioned there.

Not having taken the high ground when available..Lee decides to ta1ke Little Round top by infantry charge..

Several charges were tried, all repelled, primarily by Chamberlain's 20th Maine...

Final nearly out of ammunition,  Josh Chamberlain orders a "fixed  battle" charge, which breaks the confederate line, and sweeps it aside.

The turning point of Gettysburg ..which was the turning point of the war..

Before the war, Josh Chamberlain  was a professor at Bowdoin college, went back to the job as a veteran..lter to be elected governor of Maine.
