I'm only knowledgeable (sort of) about 20 gauge.
I've killed an 8 point and a fawn with Winchester foster style slugs.
They were accurate in my NEF single barrel and both were instant kills.
I have two badges on my orange vest showing my Illinois kills.
Plus I have an 8 point patch and a fawn patch on it and folks raspberry me for the fawn patch.

Plus, any of my four (4) lifetime deer kills, could have been taken with my .22 rifle either between the eyes or in the ear hole.
Longest shot was 50 yards with a .50 Hawken, a .410 could have also taken those four.

JMHO-  I've never understood and I'm
not understanding now about the mania
over mega antlers. I've seen some really
nice deer members at the old GB and
here that would be scoffed at by others,
and would actually be illegal kills in some
counties here.  IMO today's deer hunters
are their own worst enemy

,

Big game hunting with rifles only came to NY State  about 30 years ago.  Before that, it was shotgun with slugs only. I normally used a 12 ga, but my Dad used 20ga all his life, and both were plenty adequate.

He normally used Ithaca pumps..while after trying repeaters, I found the H&R slug guns to be most accurate, so that is what I normally used.

My experiences with the .410 are a bit less gratifying...but then I'm not much of a shotgun fan, especially with shot.

I gave the fawn to the BIL of my brother who's family only eat wild game and got to eat some of it two days later.
Some kind of casserole looking thing with venison, potatoes, bell peppers, in gravy.
That was the most tender venison I've ever ate.
