Just got my H&R NEF Buffalo rifle in 45/70. I've been breaking it in the backyard. The blowing snow and subzero temps are bothersome but I had to try it out. Any one use one of these and have any suggestions? I thought it might work good on a bufflo hunt.

They have one major flaw. Not enough elevation adjustment on the rear sight! I had to rig up a long range vernier sight behind the receiver. With the stock Williams sight, my gun hit 4"-6" low at 100 yds, with any ammo.
They are pretty accurate, and with a trigger job, and correct rear sight, they can shoot.
Another solution to the rear sight, is a spacer and longer screws to remount the Williams. I'd guess it would need 1/8" or so to get to 100 yds, more for longer distance.

My brother had one and sold it to a co-worker. He wanted it for long-range shooting in CASS. He installed a tangsight and using his own molded bullets and loads, consistantly gets excellant groups at 100yds. I've shot it with diff loads and all hit to POA. 300 grainers were pussycats while the 500 grainers let you know you pulled the trigger.

Mine will go out to 200 with the Williams sight using BP loads. BTW, it is rechambered to 45-90.

I had one but traded it off cause I couldn't see the sights well enough. It had a Long Range Soule sight installed in a false tang in the wrist of the receiver. It (the sight) was bought from and installed by Lee Shaver in MO. www.egunsmiths.com

Lee does excellent work and is a craftsman. I highly recommend him.

With factory smokeless loads this sight was only elevated halfway up when shooting at 600yds. The rifle was very accurate with jacketed loads for me.

H&R offers a new rear for the Buff in the store at their websight. It has a little more elevation, and a shorter front sight can be ordered from Lyman to increase your sighting distance.

They have no idea the range the Buffalo Classic has with that Soule sight. I suspect there will be several Buffalo Classic's this year at the Quigley match. Closest target is 225 yards, and the farthest is 800 yards.

It will be alot of fun :eek:

Here's another trick I did to mine, that will aid in handling the heavier recoiling loads. Remove the buttplate, and fill the hole in the stock with #7 1/2-#9 birdshot. Make sure it is slightly high, so that the buttplate slightly compresses it, when reinstalled. This will add about a pound to the BC's weight, and make it much more comfortable in absorbing heavier loads.
If you need to take the buttstock off for any reason, jst dump the shot, and put it back in when you're done.

Howdy all,

I did have a Buff Classic that I used for our club matches and it was great. I messed up and sold, course I got a awesome shotgun before that was over. I had put on a vernier sight with screws and a dab of epoxy on the wrist, then I proceeded to win our matches quite regularly. I also hit our Billy Dixon target at 1500+ yards quite a few times. Now I am rebarreling my roller and hope to have it ready for my trip to Forsythe, MT. in June.

That H&R will has a fair trigger, a decent hammer fall, and will shoot 500 grainer's just great.

I know with low velocity loads in mine, there was a little room to go down (not much) when shooting at 50yds and a lot more room to go up when shooting 600yds. Keep in mind, this was shooting 400gr pills at about 1440fps. I'm sure using 500gr and slower velocities will bring you near the top of that sight.

I't does have a LOT of room for elevation though. Ideal set-up in my mind. Plus if you want to hunt with it, you can remove the eyecup (if you don't have adjustable eyepieces) and have a much larger orifice to see through to spot game faster.

Let us know how they do at the Quigley. I do wish I hadn't sold mine now.

i got my buff set up kinda like the one you had except it has a standard creedmore tang sight on it. i have just started working with it and am able to keep all shots inside the kill zone on a life sized deer target at 375 yards.
i want to send that creedmore off to lee and let him doctor it up some with the windage adjustments. i got it off the sass website from a pard on there for 25 bucks and it is pretty repeatable for a cheap sight.
i love shootin long range with my buff.
it seems to just really start to shoot out past 200yards

it is handi i am having a ball with this thing
shoulder took a beating at first but now i dont even use any padding at all
the steel butplate doesnt bother me
