Jim Chambers - English Fowler Project
« on: September 20, 2021, 05:13:05 AM »
Well after exactly 1 year from ordering I have finally received my English Fowler kit from Chambers.  Not a real big deal, after the stock was not ready by end of winter last year I told Barbie it was no hurry since I won't touch it until about December.   They graciously waved the cost of stock upgrade that I requested so good to go.

After getting it, I had to wet down the butt to see what I would be working with and it looks like a beautiful piece of American Walnut.  Looking forward to my 3rd Chambers project!

Will do.  I'm going to have a hard time waiting until winter to start on this thing...

Do you know, are all Chambers rifles that long of a wait? I have been wanting to get an Isaac Haines.

No, I think they are getting caught up.  The hold up was their stock maker, he was having issues with sourcing wood and the whole COVID deal.  I also wanted a wood upgrade, so that slowed it down also.  I know of guys from other sites that got them much quicker.  I almost got the Isaac Haines on my first build but went with the Edward Marshall instead.

Got a few things completed so I guess I should post some pictures for those that are interested.

I am amazed at how well done this pre-carved stock is. The other two that I've gotten from Chambers had a few minor issues, but there was also a lot needed as far as setting the barrel lower and back to get correct alignment of the lock and touch hole, but overall, I thought they were very good. This fowler stock was damn near drop in! A little wood removal for channel and for breech plug and that was it. Tang dropped right in perfect, nothing removed. Lock plate dropped right in perfect and touch hole is where it's supposed to be. I'm not saying it's a CNC Kibler, but dang not much chisel work so far... I was actually very nervous as I could see with the eye that things were going to be close and everything could have easily been on the other side of the realm! Barrel is also pinned.

Butt plate was a pain in the rear and seemed to take forever, but looks good, no side gaps and will snug in nicely after screws are placed.

Got the trigger plate in place. Need to drop it in a little more. I do have a little gap around one of the ears, that I may either leave as is of glue in a tiny sliver of wood.

Overall, this stock is really cut well and other than the tiny issue with the trigger plate cut, everything has been going smoothly. Very happy with it. Next step will be placing ramrod thimbles, cleaning out lock mortice and then drilling and tapping for the tang bolt.

Well, I got her done yesterday.  Really fun build and a lot quicker than the other 2 I've done and pretty pleased at how it came out.
Gonna pour some shot down the tube today and see how she patterns, this will be turkey gun from now on.
