Morels!
« on: May 17, 2022, 12:45:39 PM »
I thought that the 90 deg weather was going to burn the morels off but on a whim, I stopped by public area and found this bunch in about 5 minutes and to get to my daughter's track meet so couldn't look much more but will hit it tomorrow again.  Good to find some anyway, far cry from the guy in Iowa that found 175 lbs in 2 days though...

They are one of the best tasting things in the world in my opinion.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

The only shroom I’ll trust my own judgment to is puffballs.

I’d hate to kill my wife and I with a toadstool.

However, I have eaten them that a trusted friend had picked and they were delicious.

If you can't identify a  morel, you are blind.

I can’t recall ever seeing one in the woods.
Of course I was usually looking up for squirrels. :)

There are quite a few delicious mushrooms that are hard to screw up.  Hen of the woods, Chicken of the woods, oysters, shaggy mane, black trumpet and of course giant puffballs.  I've found and eaten all of them among others without concern and I'm no pro...

I guess if I'd had a book on them years ago I would have eaten them, but now if I bent over and picked just one mushroom I'd need a day to rest my back. :)

Cooked a batch up last night, lightly dusted with flour and fried in butter is my favorite!  Couple fingers of bourbon while cooking makes them even better!

I never saw (or noticed) a morel until last summer, when I was helping my son do an aerial mapping of a long, state sponsored, nature trail.
I am familiar with a couple or three mushroom species, plus the puff ball.  Since mushroom are such a small percentage of my diet, I don't imbibe.
however, since to mis-identify can be a very painful, expensive and sometimes deadly choice, most wild I would chance, is an occasonal puffball.
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

Although you are missing out, I am glad that that sentiment is so widespread.  Most of my mushroom foraging is on public land although we find quite a bit on our land as well, some mushrooms are very specific on where they can grow.
