NASA announced last week that a rocket of unknown national origin crashed into the moon earlier this year, producing the rare feat of double crater impact on the surface.

According to NASA, the agency's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which collects moon data, spotted two craters after the "mystery rocket body" crashed into the moon on March 4, with the eastern crater measuring roughly 19.5 yards in diameter and the western about 17.5 yards in diameter.

The agency said the double crater might have formed because the rocket held a large mass on each end of it. This is unusual because a rocket usually holds most of its mass on one end, where the engines are located.

NASA added that no known rocket body has ever formed a double crater.

On Thursday, Chron reported no space-capable country had claimed the rocket.

We will end up needing them, eventually. If a rouge country ever decides to start taking down satellites. Or hitting the ISS. And there’s a good possibility this will happen. Starting with ,or causing a WWIII. We all here have said the next war will include space battles in orbit. Crippling and blinding the enemy’s high tech abilities here on the ground.

My guess would be China,a rocket with a heavy payload. It was meant to crash like that.

If true that no one knows the origin,  our ICBM detection and defense is garbage.

Right?  We (and our enemies) were led to believe that as soon as something left the launchpad we would respond in kind if offensive, now who knows what we are capable of.

When this story broke I looked for other reports other than NASA. None, basically a NASA feed story.

Not to mention we have earth and space based optical equipment that could picture the rocket debris quite well.
.
.

What earth based optical equipment do we have that can see the backside of the moon?

LiveScience said the debris was traveling at approximately 5,770 miles per hour when it hit the lunar surface."

The photos that are available are very clear.

TM7: Did you see this one? Impacts are clear and there is a noticeable fringe of lighter material apparently blown to the side upon impact.

The “mystery” rocket is almost certainly the Chinese Chang’e 5-T1 booster, launched in 2014.  So no “failure” of our ICBM detection systems - amazing how some folks jump to such unfounded premature conclusions.   It was known months ago that it would impact the moon, so no sudden surprise there either.

The photo resolution is too poor to see much in the way of “crash debris” - although anyone who has seen what remains of a 737 after impacting the earth at the near vertical will understand why little debris would be seen anyway, particularly considering the likely extreme impact velocity of the booster.  Nothing to see here folks, just NASA trying to appear relevant in the media.  Next NASA press release - “transexual bacteria found living on the ISS!”.
