I can understand why the Animals version was the hit version. Like Bruce Springsteen, I have never understood why Dylan was so popular. Neither can sing for sour apples.

In an article on the history of the song House of the Rising Sun, Dylan said when he heard the Animals version, that convinced him it was time to switch to an electric guitar.
People  - often -  say other versions of covers of the Animals, but the Amnals version is just one of many; if one goes by reactions to various versions on Youtube, the Frigid Pink version is the one chosed over the Animal version, but then the one done by a  Baptist Church choir for a movie is another high energy rock version.

I won a couple of records in a KAAY contest.  One of them was by The Uniques and it had a cover of The House of The Rising Sun that was quite good.  Never saw or heard any reference to The Uniques but just checked DuckDuckGo and found they were a Louisiana band that recorded 5 albums.

They did the short version but did a very good job.
