never fails
« on: August 27, 2022, 08:21:35 AM »
i could take something apart and put all the bolts in a magnetic box and when i go to put it together ones gone. Pulled the clutch cover off my polaris general took out 8 bolts. I even counted them on the floor. Pulled the clutches off and cleaned them and put new rollers in the primary and a new belt and low and behold i put it all back together and only had 7 cover bolts left. Im on a cement floor im my pole barn and it just disappeared. Im terrible about taking off to get a tool and taking some part or bolt with me and sitting it down and forgetting but i looked everywhere and no bolt. Did i tell you i hate working on vehicles!!!

I know what you mean.  If I have a job that should take an hour, inevitably I will have issues with 2 or 3 other things in getting to the thing to be repaired, and that one hour job turns into four.

It happens
I disassembled a reel here in
one room and one of the tiny
screws disappeared. I've crawled
around with a flashlight looking
for it, and moved everything around
trying to find it. Luckily, I had
another one from a different
make of reel that worked
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

It really is amazing how you can drop a nut, bolt, or small part on the floor, and it completely disappears. Small springs are the worst. Springs have a knack of traveling to unknown places. I have learned to take something apart that has a spring, by taking it apart inside a plastic bag.

I disassembled some something many years
ago sitting on the living room couch mid December.
Should have taken 5 minutes maximum to
open it and check or put a drop of oil in,
or whatever I was doing, and a small spring
went flying out and dissapeared.
I probably spent 45 minutes crawling around
on hands and knees looking, but finally
gave it up and put whatever the thing was
away.  After Christmas taking the tree
down,  low and behold of course the
little spring was right in the middle of the
thing. What are the odds? . . .
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Been there done that. Crawling around on hands and knees with a flashlight looking for a spring that went flying. Springs from firearms seem to be the ones that most like to go flying.

I stare at my CRT screen for the desktop PC used to make GBORL posts and plow the Internet.  Right there, in the middle of the lower 1/3, is a gouge made by a revolver spring 3 years ago that went "spoing" as I was removing it from the frame.  I spent 2 days trying to locate it, bought a replacement, and the day that arrived, found the original.  Figures...now I use a plastic bag.

The shop gremlins are always just waiting. Although they defy me pretty well when I call in the heavy artillery in the form of my wife they usually return whatever they absconded with. I put a spring kit in a Sar B-6 sometime ago and a small part with a very stout spring went "boing" and then "pop" when it flew out and hit something. Evidently it was very precious to the little rascals because a lot of threats plus both my wife and I looking in, around, over, and under, with bright flashlights and bringing out magnets on sticks they still have it. I even cleaned out my shop vac and ran it into every place I could and still no part. I had to buy a new piece including a spring I didn't need as that is the only way a replacement is sold.

The part is difficult to hold and needle nosed pliers weren't up to the job as I found out. There isn't a zip lock bag big enough to contain the gun, pliers, and both my hands so I made a little tool to replace it.

Tuning up a BL-22 I lost the same aftermarket spring twice. They must have felt sorry for me because when I reordered the spring they sent me three of them :)

At one time I was bad about losing single items like a spring or screw. Then I started putting them in a baggie, and labeling them. I couldn't count the number of baggies I've lost over the last few years. I also have sever CRS. I was looking for something the other day (Can't remember what) and discovered it was in my hand.

Contacts are like that, you drop one or it pops out in
the bathroom and you can't find it. Then in a few days you find it in the hallway.

what made me real mad was i have one of those mechanic rolling stools to sit on down low when im working and its got a tray under the seat for putting tools and parts. Why the hell am i so stupid that i didnt use it. Then i went to buy a new screw and you had your choice. One for 10 bucks plus 6 bucks shipping or the whole seat of 8 for 19 bucks shipped. probably cost polaris a couple pennys a piece. I even looked on ebay and the same story there except they didnt even offer them at any package size less then 8. No doubt would have bought the whole set anyway but it pissed me off there trying to charge 16 bucks for one bolt.

I once lost a screwdriver while sitting on one of those mechanic seats working on an atv. I looked and looked and looked and finally found it----in my lap. Unfortunately my oldest grandson was present since it was his atv and witnessed the whole thing. Now when he is around when I misplace something he tells me to look in my lap---with a little smirk on his face. Kids never let you forget.
