Red Salmon, Kenai River, Kasilof
« on: July 27, 2022, 03:10:38 AM »
Arrived on Monday. Met up with my younger son and my grandson. Drove down from Anchorage to Soldotna and have been fishing since. My son has a wide network of friends who live in AK. They make this possible.

When the salmon are running the bears don’t need to be fed. But walking the trails to the river can be interesting.  ;D

So very true. On an earlier trip, we stopped along the highway to fish the Russian river. That involved a walk of about 100 yards through the woods bordering the river. It was a spooky walk.

I lived in Alaska for 27 winters, and fished the Russian River almost every year.  Usually not the confluence with the Kenai, but upstream.  So much fun using wet flys my wife tied, one year I made a grand slam of all Alaskan salmon using her “Fat Freddies”.  Reds, Silvers, Kings, Dogs and Pinks - not all on the Kenai of course, but an awesome experience I will take to the grave.

Over the years, I caught a lot of fish out of those rivers, I never had even one bear problem.

Of course, I've never been afraid of bears anyway, and I did hunt them quite a bit even taking other guys out to get one.

Wished I'd known you were here; I live right off the sterling in Cooper Landing. Glad you had a good time with your family!

Ouch! Would have been nice. Hope that you are ok and catching the limit when you can.
The picture shows three generations of Doyles on the river.

Nice haul, nothing beats a Kenai Red for eating. Had a fresh one for dinner last night in fact. Nice pic too, looks like a good time!

Getting back to this thread for a moment. “Fat Freddies”…got a picture that you could post?
