wonder how big the batteries and the charging cable for an aircraft carrier would need to be. Id about bet youd have to tow a barge behind as big as the carrier. Refueling in flight fighters?? Hook up a charging cord and fly in perfect unison for about 12 hours instead of seconds. Then for our tanks we can go into enemy territory ahead of time and build charging stations. Are you being facetious or just stupid?  We went to steam because it was BETTER.  Faster, more reliable, etc.  We went to petroleum for the same reason.  Ditto nuclear.  Batteries are NOT better.  When and if green becomes better, it will make sense to change.  That ain't now.

tell you what. You sail yourself a nice 200 foot (and thats god awful big for a sailing ship) sailing ship and go up against a nuke carrier. Or even a small modern 100foot patrol boat and see who comes home. When you can get a 1100 foot steel aircraft carrier up to 20 knots to launch planes come and talk to me. When you can run down a nuke submarine and dept charge it with your sail boat come talk to me. They are kind of like electrics though. It would take you a week to sail the length of lake michigan and a gas boat can do it in 10 hours.

My point was we move forward as technology changes...  We can never go to total electric battery powered, but Nuclear to generator to electric motor is very viable.  Oar haulers in big open pit mines used to use a diesel generator to power electric drive motors at the wheels because they could control each wheel independently.  Same could be used on ships - electric motors develop peak torque at start up so they are great for heavy to move slow acceleration vehicles like ships.  I have said all along that nuclear is the way to go "green", very little pollution and "safe" as long as you look after them.  Take spent fuel and send it into the sun it will hardly notice the added fuel.

Almost all aircraft carriers are nuclear.  Same with submarines.  A lot of other surface ships also.  Nuclear is considered green.

Problem is planes and tanks, as well as trucks, etc. 

They are studying a way to use excess power from the nuclear reactors on aircraft carriers to manufacture synthetic jet fuel from air and water.  It takes a lot of electricity, but it can be done.  Sabatier process is where it starts. 

Tanks and trucks.  Well they would have to tow a lot of solar panels or windmills to keep them powered. 

We have plenty of lithium in the US, but it would have to be strip mined.  Enough in California to make every car electric.  Cobalt (for more efficient batteries) is what is hard to get and China owns about 90% of the cobalt mining in the world, which includes South America, Africa, and Asia.  Tesla is using iron in lithium-iron batteries for half their cars now due to obtaining cobalt.  Cobalt-lithium batteries are used in their high mileage cars. 

Like I have been saying.  For us to go electric vehicles, we have to get the mileage up, the price of the vehicles down, and the charging times down.  Then the electric grid needs more nukes, windmills, and solar panels, as well as some type of cheap battery storage.  The grid should go alternative energy before the vehicles due to the need to charge the vehicles.

I was one of the flight crew on a C141. Big airplane, could haul just about anything. Including cars and large trucks.
Hauled a M60 tank once to Germany, and still had room to spare. For supply’s , ammo , crates of new M14 rifles.
And a 106 recoilless rifle.

   IO hav-e no problem going with the technology, when it becomes available.  When our su%pplioes of oil and/or coal starts to run out,
   the price will automatically go up, to a point where private industry will come up with v1iable solutions.
 
     To push the envelope now at the cost of many trillions of dollars debt, is foolhardy. If the Dems do that, we are likely to have an unprepared military, unfit for battle over the next few decades...and being deeply in debt, cannot afford the necessary corrections.

  That would be just where China wants us when they go for Taiwan, probably before the end of this decade.
   ..But that may just be what Biden & Co. really want.
