Saved from the dumpster
« on: November 21, 2022, 07:41:45 AM »
I would have put this in the woodworking forum but it appears dead as a door nail so here it is where someone might see it.

My wife purchased an old clock from a friend when she was cleaning out her deceased parent's home and found it. It is a 1930 Hamilton Sangamo and was in bad shape. Part of the movement was gone, wood joints had shrunk, and the finish was a complete loss. Both my son and I did a lot of internet searching to find a new movement that would accept the original hands as they seem to be unique to the clock and I wanted to retain them. You can't really see in the picture that the case is 4 inches deep. The face is 16 inches square and appears to made of white oak although I can't be positive as I have never worked with any oak but red. A lot of sanding, crack filling, staining, and finally spray Minwax for a finish plus polishing all the really dull brass parts and it lives again. It is totally made of of 3/4" wood and is heavy so I had to find a stud to hang it.

Good Job O&S...One  an see you put both ingenuity and skill into creating that work of art..

So far as artistry and craftsmanship... I tried to activate some interest in same over in the knives forum, and even presented some examples ... but had very few bites, so I deleted many of those posts.

I'm still not convinced that some here do not have some of the artist lurking in their soul.  I declined to think that
few replied because they were without talent.

Thanks for your post...let's hope something gets started along that line.  If it does, I will try sharing more..

I used to make some knives just as a hobby. I might post some pictures for you to look at if you are interested as I have finally figuered out how to get pictures on my computer again since the last huge update. Every time I think I have things sorted out they change it up. I need to take the ones I haven't given away out of the shadow boxes they are in, dust them off, and treat them to a new coat of paste wax. It will be a good time to take pictures of them which I have never done. How dust gets in a shadowbox is beyond me but it does.

Try putting one of those battery clock movements in it. And use the old hands, I’ve done that here with an old clock.

Don't believe so but I have no experience with chestnut either. I am a bit wood deprived in this area as we have no native trees and no one sells anything except red oak. An internet search gave me my information on this clock and they were made from either oak, mahogany, or walnut. The were not inexpensive in 1930. There was two versions of movements, one with seven jewels that sold for $45.12 and an 11 jewel one that sold for $60. That was depression years and probably why production ceased on this clock that year. For a comparison that $60 one would sell for $972.57 today.

There was a guy on eBay who was selling stuff from the old Soviet Union military (Navy surplus) I bought a wind up clock from him and it still works even today, and keeps perfect time. He lived in Las Vegas and came here after the fall and still had contacts in Russia.
