Otto, good for you. See if you can get your hands on any of those fancy rifles that Sadam and his boys had.
If you do go you can get a satelite phone, around $500. basic minimum rate $35 month, calls home $1.35 a minute.
The satelite connection for a lap top would be a nice accessory. No idea what the connection costs would be.
Sounds like an oportunity of a lifetime. Just remember to duck and take some good body armor with you.

I have been doing EXTENSIVE research on the situation. Yes there is danager. However 99% of it is directed towards the MILITARY. The majority of the Iraqi people ARE grateful for the end of SADDAMS regime. There have been articles in various publications during, immediatly after, and recently about the Iraqi people and their thoughts, and feelings about Americans and foriegeners. Their responses have been FAVORABLE for the most part.
I feel I would be safer there than in Latin America or in most of the major American cities(at 2AM}

Your research is spot on. When I went out to the Middle East, the political situation was very bad and if you believed what you saw in the media then you would never go. According to the media anyone there was a target and the decadent 'West' was hated and abhored.

Yet when I was there, when people heard me speak, they would queue up to shake my hand and thank me for being there helping them and ask and plead when were the westerners coming back to help them.

In fact, I falt safer walking the streets of Tehran at night in 1982-1986 than walking the streets of cities in my own country.

They don't recruit old guys like me...They wouldn't even take me back in the mid-80's unless I paid all of my traffic fines first! Why did they think I wanted to be enlisted? Just needed to pay those fines. :cry: Back then they were really picky about recruiting because they had too many trying to get in....The Navy was turning people away right and left because of what they called the "Top Gun" effect. That movie made every John want to be a pilot.

A friend of mine is in Bagdad now as a civilian. I wont mention his name or specific job but he has to do with the prison or corrections system. The prison system in Iraq was by and large looted and made practically useless and requires rebuilding of the physical plants, the administration, personnel and operations. He loves a challenge and man has he got one! From what I understand he will be amply rewarded!

I would go, but there are a lot of "ifs" : If I wasn't married, if I wasn't an old f@rt, etc., etc.,

Well I wont be going but my Marine PFC Grandson will be leaving this June for the "Sunni" triangle. He wont be making a lot of tax free dollars. He is looking forward to it. We pray that he conducts himself with honor and returns safely. I wont say anymore.

You're right, most of the attacks are aimed at the military, but not only the military. There have been over two dozen civilian contract workers killed since the war ended. No mention of how many wounded. So it's not like it isn't a concern. Just two days ago, two more civilians were shot by a Iraqi disguised as a police officer.
