Range Day
« on: December 15, 2022, 09:55:20 AM »
Took time for a good range trip yesterday. Now that I’m retired, I have to say, it seemed much more fun when I was still working. I used to take half a day off, usually when the morning was full of meetings and then the afternoon would drag. So I really looked forward to those days, like a little vacation. Still fun, just missing something.

Took the wife to the range yesterday for an hour. She was shooting her NAA mini revolver and I was seeing how tight a group I could get with a Chazel .22LR X 6" X 12 ga insert. I got about 6" group at 50 yards. After about an hour other folks started to show up and we were really cold, so we went on into town.

I've not been to a public range in
a while.  I did some scope zero a
while back, and got it done and left.
In my area, pretty much all the ranges
have a majority of very young "operator "
wannabes that wear all tactical clothing
and combat vests and generally
dress as if they're playing seal team
or mr. special forces man or the like,
or else the hood rat saggy britches
underwear hanging out and shoot
they 9 milla-meetah and do magazine
dumps until they get tossed out, etc.
Maybe 1 or 2 in 10 that can actually
shoot.  The last time a few urban
commandoes were there, the one
next to me made his targets look
like a 5 year old with a red ryder bb gun.
I could have done better with a cheap
Topper shotgun ( and have)
Supposed to be some newer places
now with stricter rules, but I haven't
been to any of them
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Yeah, I don’t go to public ranges anymore. I go to my range during the week, fairly early if I can. Usually nobody there then, may have the place to myself for a few hours. Very relaxing. Played with my new-to-me .22lr Contender and my Buckmark Silhouette gun. Great fun.

I shoot on our club range during the week, since I'm retired. Don't see commandos then.

Gene, I agree. Did seem more fun though when could be on the range instead of working. Guilty pleasure I guess.

I sure don't shoot as much as I used to, these days it almost seems like work where it used to seem like fun.

I've not been to a public range is perhaps 25 years or more. I have my own range in the back yard that lets me shoot out to 100 yards. I also have a back stop at 25 yards with a plethora of metal targets to shoot at. I have steel at 100 yards also and can shoot paper at any distance within the 100 yard limitation. Most are swingers cuz I'm too old and worn out to walk out to reset them.

I do have six 8" falling plates at 25 I like to shoot especially with my self defense guns. Using the lasers instead of the irons on them I can hit those plates most of the time. I miss only if I get in a hurry or get careless.

I'm like Bill, not hitting the range as much as I used to.  ..But of course, I have my own range, and if I meet anyone there, they may have to explain.. ;D
My town highway dept has a gravel pit about 3 miles from me that their employees use as a range. I sometimes shoot there, just for a change of venue.

Compared to what I see with other guys, there are 2 rod & gun clubs about 4 & 5 miles from me, and I have held memberships with both at different times. Their ranges are always open and free to members, dues being $30 and $40 per year.

Don't use them as much as I used to though...

I have a nice little 50 yard range at my camp which is 70 miles away. The nearest public range is a little closer, but I prefer mine. 50 yards isn't very challenging, but I enjoy shooting by myself. I try to shoot 2 days a week from mid January through mid April weather permitting. Fuel and component costs have taken a little fun out of shooting though.

I didn't get in much shooting this year either. My wife's health problems kept me at home a lot plus I haven't been very swift in the locomotion department this year either. Next year should improve.

Haven't been shooting much this year either, component prices being as they are. Really have to think twice about slinging lead like there's no end. Shooting more 22lr now. Getting it in bulk from Liberty Shooting Sports. Sometimes you get good ammo for a good deal there.

My friend and neighbor has a large gravel operation, and a fleet of 50-75 Mack trucks.  I am free to use his pit as often as I wish, so long as there are no operations going on.
That pit (mine) will allow up to 800 yards range, but I never use it beyond 100 yards or so, since that is near maximum for most shooting in these hills.

Besides...I don't want to see how far my skills have slipped at my age..

When you get my age, you are like an old car somebody pulled out of a barn after 60 years storage..

The carburetor doesn't carb, the generator doesn't gen, and the pistons.......well, they don't work very well either !  ;D
