We had a dept policy of shoot on site any stray pitbull, or one causing trouble. I have no idea how many I shot in 21 years, and since.

Now, maybe I'm "reaching" a bit here, but IMO, the owner(s) should be charged with attempted murder-by-proxy.  After all, in almost every state, (if not every state), in the union, the owner is responsible for the actions of, and damage caused by his/her cur, whether on or off a leash.
But, I'm with both of you.  Destroy the critter on the spot.

Depending on the state there are likely felony charges that can be filed on the owners.

Over the years, I've owned several G. Shepherds, Golden Retriever's, and a Doberman. Have been around friends with Pit Bulls, they didn't act any different than mine did. Big difference in how their raised. Article even stated the dogs owner said they liked to chase people on their bikes. A**hole to the max. Put the dogs down, and serve him a little street justice.

Yeah, it’s not that they are the top tier terrier that loves to kill and rip other animals to shreds. “ it’s how they are raised “ definitely not the breed... my arse.

Have to agree.  How many times do we have to hear victim's and families state "well he never did anything before".  Ask the woman who was recently mauled and her two children killed.  They had the dog for 8 years and "never had a problem".  So, yeah they may act like a golden retriever, right up until they don't.

yup the real big problem with pits is the type of owner they attract. Son in law has had them for years and his are basicaly lap dogs. As freindly as they come. Come into his yard and they run up to play. Come into mine and my lab will scare the crap out of you. He wont bite but he will make strangers nervous. Last one was a docile as they come. Dont know why he did that but the mother of the docile one would scare strangers too. Now the son in laws dog had pups and he gave one to his kids buddy who treated it like crap. Left it out in the cold all winter and never gave it affection. That dog bit my daughter just last month. It had to be put down. But the truth is that kid is the one that should have been put down. Never graduated school. Lives in a tin can trailer with his ma whos on welfare and both of them like the pipe. Sure not the type that are going to pay 500-1000 bucks for a dog. Pits are usually given away free around here. Now the thing with a pit is if a beagle bites you it bites you. If a pit bites you it BITES you. That said ive been bit twice and both times it was by those (censored word) wiener dogs. Probably the most aggressive dogs ive ever run across and i hate them.

Well if you were a little pooch that had been bred to go in a badger's den, whip him, and drag him out you might be aggressive too.  ;D That carries over to they are pretty well fearless with anything.

My wife likes Taco Dogs and has two. They are pretty good dogs, and they make good watch dogs. A mouse can fart and they will hear it.  ;D

Neither one of us likes cats, they stink and ruin furniture. A stupid Tom cat will get under the hood of your truck, and take a nap on your engine. Then you start it and bye bye kitty. ;) what a mess.

Its no coincidence that many times when a child or person is viciously attacked by a dog its a pit. Not just bitten, but viciously attacked. I think people that have kids and then own a pit bull have a screw loose.

Yes!  I believe the best watch dog, tells the owner there is something astir...then the owner decides what he shall do about the situation.

you havent heard my lab when someone knocks on the door. Believe me anyone would have second thoughts about busting in. Ups and fed x and the mail lady laugh at him. He will come a running sounding like a hell hound with his hair standing up and yet his tail wagging waiting for a treat and some attention. They all know hes harmless but a stranger wouldnt get out of his car. Thats for sure. Funny thing is if a strange kid comes down the street, he will run out to play with none of that raising hell. Even women dont bother him as much. Worse is men with beards for some reason he gets more scared around them. I think it all comes from a buddy. Hes the one that gave us the pup when our last one died. He drove 300 miles and paid good money for him. But we later found out the pup was a couple weeks to young to be taken from his mother and at the time that buddy had a beard that could have passed for one of the zz top guys. Maybe he little guy was just petrified on the ride home and never forgot it. People that know him say hes about the most loveable dog they ever met. 100 lb lap dog and it doesnt matter whos lap it is.

Difference in a wiener dog bite and a Pit type dog is....You may need a stitch and a shot after the Wiener bites. You may need intensive care, or worse when a Pit B. attacks. The breed of a dog, and an irresponsible owner makes for a potential disaster. Sad fact is....Most Pit type dog owners today are not responsible people.

My oldest grandson had a lab that is around a 100 pounds. He's a big wuss. Both of his children rode him like a horse until they got too big and now use him for a pillow watching TV. Just a pile of kids and a huge dog in the floor. His only fault is walking around swinging his tail and if it gets you across a shin it like getting whacked with a broom handle. He also has a bark that would make the hair stand up on a full grown lion. His name is Barrikade and he is big enough to be used for one. I didn't misspell his name.

The psi on a pitbull bite is around 240psi. The dachshund psi is around 500psi. The real difference is size, and physical strength to rip and tear.

typical lab. This one hasnt had kids riding on his back because my grandkids are all grown up. My last lab was used as a horse everytime the grandkids came over. had to chuckle. My oldest granddaughter has a baby. It was only a couple months old christmas. They came for dinner and the babby was on the floor in the living room crying and my dog was going from me to my wife all in a tissy grabbing us by the pant leg trying to drag us over to the baby. They changed its diper and she settled down and the dog went over and layed right next to her and stayed there for at least a hal hour. Basicaly until food was served and it was time clean the floor

As you can see by the chart. Pitt bulls lead by a large percentage of fatal dog attacks.  I don't think it has a damn thing to do with who owns the dog, because there are lots of (censored word) owners that own other breeds like rotts and shepherds. Pit Bulls lead the pack in fatal attacks because of the breed, not because of who owns them.  Pits have a hair trigger, and can seem like tame dogs until something sets that hair trigger off.

From my experience and my wife's some pit's and pit crosses are great dogs and others not so much. Our oldest grandson has a pit that doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body. She loves absolutely every person she meets and her worst behavior is rubbing against a new person and licking them.

On the other hand our daughter had a pit that seemed perfectly normal but as we found out the hard way he turned out to have what I figure was a passive aggressive behavior. My wife and daughter were sitting on a stair landing visiting and the daughters dog was sitting between them and got jealous. Now mind you this dog was fairly large for a pit and weighed around 90 pounds so he was a big one. He leaned over and bit my wife on the face. Basically his mouth covered my wife's face and she had several punctures. If he had been really serious about it she could have been seriously disfigured or even worse. He was put down immediately.

Our current dog was a rescue and is a pit, rottweiler and german shepherd cross which we didn't learn about until after one of her litter mates was genetically tested. She looked like a lab cross and we assumed that's what she was. She has proven to be a good, loyal and loving companion for my wife and rides shotgun with me when I go to town.

It makes me wonder about personality being tied to different genetic strains/traits along with environment and how they are handled as well. This dog along with her littermates was abused and she was scared of her own shadow when we got her. She and my wife bonded immediately and the past 2 plus years has displayed no aggressiveness at all. Her first response to any unusual or possible threatening situation is to tell us about it and expects us to resolve the problem.

Well, I've heard countless stories just like yours, "after the fact". He/she, never did that before. Until he/she did.

In my opinion, your wife's "puncture wounds" to the face would be convincing enough, that "HE WAS SERIOUS".

Good luck with your pitbull/Rottweiler/German Shepherd cross. And I especially wish any visitors luck.  :o

I don't figure visitors are a problem at all. The dog has an uncanny ability to tell the difference between good folks and those of questionable character that show up to the house . The same goes when we are in town and people want to pet her.

Your last comment was acerbic and out of line, my comments were merely our experiences with the pup we have and nothing else.

This is a thread consisting of experiences, and opinions, concerning pitbulls. My last comment was not intended to be severe, bitter, sarcastic, but possibly did have a touch of cynicism given both mine, and your past experience/experiences concerning pitbulls.

Most any dog behaves around close family members. It's strangers, or infrequent visitors, where many times where the tragedy occurs.

True enough on situational circumstances. One of my english setters who was the most gentle, welcoming dog I had and never knew a stranger bit a siding salesman measuring our house for metal siding. years ago. He was a tad bit on the shady side and was probably more suited to selling used cars and all that entails. Had a problem with a springer spaniel we took in. He was a great dog for months and then one day for no apparent reason snapped and I had to put him down.

Never have been a big fan of pits but at the same time have seen several examples of good ones including the pit mix one we have now. Could be they are/were an exception but the wife and I also control and monitor any contact the dog has with with strangers just in case.

I had a Jack Russell terrier that would take on anything movin. He liked me, Linda, my mother, and my oldest son. Anybody else, I had to watch him like a hawk.
He didn't bluff, if you were trespassing he'd nail you as soon as he got there. He'd kill snakes, cats, "anything".

I have a life long friend thats about 6'2", weighs about 300, and a super guy. Huff hated him, and his size didn't didn't scare ole Huff a bit.

Damn I miss that dog. He was ornery, but he always protected the family.
