I picked up a 30 AW cheap and I'm trying to tell the difference between the two.  Any ideas?

Warthog.

I have a Marlin 30AW.  I have been told that it is essentially a Marlin 336 from when Marlin bought Glenfield (?) rifles.  I have compared it to my brothers 336, and the only differences we can see are barrel band placement, iron sights, etc.  Stuff that is primarily cosmetic.  I have owned it since new for 10 years.  I can shoot 1-1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds with factory ammo.

Don't know about the "AW", but the basic differences in  the current production models are as follows:

336A
Walnut finished cut-checkered hardwood with pistol grip.
Blued steel fore-end cap.
Swivel studs.
Hard rubber butt plate.
Screw-adjustable open rear, brass bead front sight with Wide-Scan™ hood.

336C
American black walnut pistol grip stock with fluted comb and cut checkering.
Blued steel barrel band with integral swivel stud.
Rubber rifle butt pad.
Adjustable semi-buckhorn folding rear, ramp front sight with brass bead and Wide-Scan™ hood.

336W
Walnut finished cut-checkered hardwood with pistol grip.
Blued steel barrel band with integral swivel.
Hard rubber butt plate.
Padded nylon sling.
Gold-plated steel trigger.
Screw-adjustable open rear, brass bead front sight with Wide-Scan™ hood.

I may be wrong but I believe 30aw was marlins budget 336 some years back.  If I'm right they were basic 336's with hardwood instead of walnut & maybe had a foreend cap instead of a band & different sights.
