  Some things seemed surreal, for ranchlands during the 1920s.. horses among the Cadillacs and Deusenbergs.. So, I will turn to our resident cowboy..

Not Dee but what you are referring to happened in Wyoming, not Texas. You claim to be a history buff so read up on that era in Wyoming. It wasn't all sunshine and roses.

   I was not aware where the movie story was located since I didn't watch the movie itself.  family disagreements perhaps (e.g. Hatfields & McCoys late 1800s).  ...And we even have had some recent cattle thieves around here.

  Of course, I don't rely on movies for much history, since they are admittedly mostly fiction.

   But range wars in Wyoming? One would think survey boundaries would have been well set by then..

  ..But hey, it's worth checking up on..

I did a preliminary search for "Wyoming range wars" and did find one reply.

I did find a reference to an 1892 Johnson county range war, but of course, that was over 40 years previous to 1923.

The Johnson County War is pretty well known and there was a pretty good movie of that name made about it in 2002 with Tom Berringer as the star. I am sure liberties were taken with facts but I found it to be enjoyable. Tom Horn met his end in Wyoming in 1903 for killing a young man and he had the reputation of being an killer for hire. Did he really do it? No one knows for sure. There was a pretty enjoyable movie titled Tom Horn made about it starring Steve McQueen, again with some of the facts probably embellished a little, if you are interested.
