A thank you
« on: November 23, 2021, 06:07:20 AM »
Thanks to Quickdtoo and Dinny and Pete
and the others here that discussed and
praised the 357 Maximum
And extra thanks to Quickdtoo for handling
the reamer rental so efficiently and with
such courtesy

Finally got to pop a deer with the Handi I
redid from a Magnum
I didn't expect the damage a Maximum
would do compared to when I took deer
with it as a Magnum.  Made me think of
deer I've seen shot with a 7 mag or 300 win mag.

Well done Ranger.
Will you butcher it or take it to a processor??

Right now it's in parts in a
cooler. After a suitable rest
for my aging back, it's soon to
be deboned for sausageification

As for the rifle, it was intended
for my nephew originally.
I just wanted to prove it up as
a Maxi. If everything goes as
intended, I'll be handing it and
200 rounds of proven ammo
to him for his birthday in a
couple of weeks

The deer was luck. A doe galloped
by and I very nearly popped it, and
had to catch myself as the doe days
ended the day before.  Lover boy
came right behind her and he
got it on the run. I was afraid I
missed or worse made a poor hit,
but he collapsed and the speed
made it somersault flippity floppety
in a heap in 20-30 yards

I’m glad to see you passing on some guns to nephews.
I’ve bought a gun for every nephew of mine and my current guns will go to a great nephew.
I’ll PM my address so you can send me some sausage.:)

The damage done by The maximum is because the bullet manufacturers don’t make the bullets for the increased velocity at impact on deer or larger game.
You almost have to handload your ammo to be sure that the bullet your using is going to perform at the velocity you are getting from your ammo. I find the Barnes XPB to be a good bullet for the max as it hasn’t broke up on several deer and antelope I have used them on. .358 rifle bullets will also work if your not expecting your shots to be 150 yards and beyond as they probably will not expand as designed.
It’s a shame that they designed the new 350 Legend cartridge to be a 9 mm bullet size as the velocity of it and the 357 maximum are very similar and handloaders could use more choices in jacketed bullets made for cartridges in their velocity range.
Heavier weight cast bullets that are powder coated seem to be a good option as PC coated bullets can be used at 2000 fps and more without leading but again there are no factory ammo loaded that way yet that I know of.
The 357 max is one of my favorite cartridges !

Oh but sir
That bullet did exactly what I
wanted it to. It made a nice hole
in one side and out the other and
took out the pump house. I couldn't
have asked for better.
You let blood out rapidly and air
in to where it doesn't belong and
the deer WILL DIE.
Now, the people that make shots
other than ribcage/heart/lungs
probably wouldn't like it, but I
don't want my valuable backstraps
or neck roast or front shoulders
messed up and unusable.
I haven't took ribs in decades and
don't open a deer up for innards
anymore since I got that disease
from cleaning a deer that made my
hands swell up so painfully
